Since its a local job, do you know what trucks they run? There's a world of difference between a Mack & other trucks when it comes to shifting....

This is what happens when people don't learn the basics. If I had my own company, I would only have manuals. People always talk about the "Steering wheel holders". A lot of the Steering wheel holders are also what I call "Right footers."

You are not in a good position.

I don't know what engine, what truck, what loads you will be pulling and where etc.

Generally torque is at 1250 RPM more or less. She will buck on you if you were in gear below torque. it's time to downshift.

High horse will be around 1500 give or take. It's time to upshift.

Get in there and grab the tractor around the yard a little bit.

Here is what will GET YOU... some 10's are 5th low range to 6th high across the box meaning you are flipping the selector then nuetral and then pull the shift knob all the way to your seat quickly and back into 6th high. You cannot go straight forward into 7th because reverse gear sits there protected by a spring. So 6th to 7th is nuetral, over one notch then up.

Find a truck this week with a 10 speed by hook or crook, pay someone a couple hundred dollars to do a dirty quick teaching. MAYBE you wont be revealed so badly as non shifting driver.

    There is ANOTHER potential problem.

If you road tested in a Automatic Trans truck for the STATE to get the CDL... you might have a restriction against manual trucks period on that license.

Do you have the Automatic restriction on your license? If so, I think you would not be hire-able anyway.

You didn't learn to drive a standard tranny in school? Didn't you drive a stick on your cdl test? If not don't you have a restriction on your cdl that limits you to autos only?

    Woodys and driverdriver Thank this.

Yes,seriously. I'd order transmissions to suit the job,not the driver. A driver that has only driven an automatic can only drive an automatic. He may even have a automatic restriction on his license.

Someone that can drive a manual can drive an automatic,9,10,Super 10,13 and 18 speed. Beck, they can probably even get themselves unstuck in the mud and snow.

Thanks for the quick replies. Their trucks are freightliners and no, I don't have the automatic restriction on my license. It was an impulse decision, knowing if I said I couldn't drive a stick, they would have passed me by. I had a chance to go to a school that trained with sticks, but I ended up going to one that only had auto's. Huge mistake as I thought sticks were a thing of the past as companies were switching to autos.
