I have been lurking here for a few months and it has been helpful. I completed school about a month ago and 2 weeks ago went to an orientation (TMC). There I had a physical and was informed I had a ventral hernia in my stomach. This doctor had me bend backwards and to the sides. It wasn't like a normal DOT physical. Either way, it is what it is, but it was devastating. My doctor says it isn't a problem and I can live the rest of my life with it, even driving. Either way I don't have the cash to pay to get it fixed right now.
I can only find one company (TMC) that has sent people home with similar conditions that people have written about on this forum. I am hoping others can tell me,based on experience, if any other companies look for hernias in any places other then the normal turn your head and cough. I don't want to go to any other orientations and get turned away day one. I am scheduled to go to another companies orientation after Christmas.

But their is hope for you.........TMC especially because of flatbed require more extensive conditioning for the duties that are required. I assure you when trying to manage a 100 200 300 lb tarp in normal and excessive conditions you probably would have made things worse.
You can look into any of the dry van or reefer co.'s......most work for OTR is 80-90 non load/unload. Their are a couple of co.'s with accounts where drivers do however, not the masses..........
Keep looking check out websites and even hit a truckstop near you and look at the advertising stands they have.........plenty of co.'s still hiring to start out and will be after the first of the year........
Good Luck and hang in their............. -
If TMC won't accept you because of the hernia just keep looking. You'll find a company.

You could have it repaired and TMC probably would accept you into orientation, you would have to check on this, but if you really wanted to be there, you'll find a way
thanks

Thank you.
I have gotten invitations to orientation at Willis Shaw, and Wel companies. Does anybody know if people have been rejected for this kind of hernia? Maybe what the physical entails?
Thank again. -
From what i've heard Willis Shaw just does the normal "turn your head and cough". And to be honest I've never heard of a company doing any other hernia check other than the normal one. So I learned something new today Good luck.
