48 states would probably be more than sufficient, unless they're getting the Canadian provinces up to Alaska involved...which would make sense IF there was enough freight heading up or back. They'll also need to build a bridge to Hawaii before that really becomes relevant, too.

What exactly are they looking for? Blanket permits country wide or the exact same rules country wide?

I read it as the same rules as far as weights, number of axles, and axle spacing across the country...and automated permitting systems to streamline the process.

I wonder how that will work for milk. Im permitted in my home state of PA for overweight, but NJ will not permit us because they claim milk is divisibe. Which it is if you look at each pound. What jersey doesnt account for is that we cant tell the farmer we'll pick you up tomorrow because NJ wont allow your milk on this truck. You have to look at the farms assigned to the route as one unit. When it goes to the dairy, the dairy expects it to arrive all together. Not on 10 different trucks.

All states surrounding PA and PA included, permit us. NJ wont. Blah!

That'll remove some of the permitting services. If companies can get permits faster and cheaper through an automated system then there's no reason for a permit service

It's the government. Trust me, they'll find some way to screw it up so bad you'll need double the services to figure out what you're supposed to do.

Streamlining...they will do it the same way that they've done everything else...by the least common denominator. Take the slowest state for permits, and bring all the other states to that level.

Why not? They did the exact same thing with the DOT regs.
