Hey all! Have an oppritunity to be a City Driver at Fedex Freight. I have close to 4 years at my beer company right now. I work 4 days a week and make about 50k a year. For some reason I’m scared as hell to switch jobs. I start at FedEx soon and just looking for some re assurance that I’m making the right move. I have two young kids at home and I think being a parent now has me overthinking this job switch.

Any reason why I wouldn’t go with Fedex vs the beer gig?

Going to FedEx is the right move. In time with the beer job your body will break down or you will be injured. Best for your family too.

I don’t have inside experience in either company, but I have gone from foodservice to LTL, and about the only thing I wasn’t prepared for is the micromanagement that is rampant in the LTL world. Good Christ. BUT with that said I agree with @intrepidor you're making the right move in body preservation and I’d be willing to bet the benefits at FedEx for you and your family will probably be better. Plus Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Thanksgiving, and the day after off with pay, stuff like that’s huge with a young family. I think you’re making the right move. There’s lots of opportunities for advancement too in LTL. There’s more supervisors and operational managers than freight on the dock it seems.

FedEx is a great company with great benefits, unless the beer hauler can top the benefits you made the right choice. My father is about to retire from FedEx, they have always taken care of our family.

Change can be scary, but your making the right move. Food service will eventually destroy your body and sooner or later you will get hurt . I drove food service for years ,and it beats you up and I'm feeling the effects of it now 20 years after getting out of it. I have a friend who delivered beer. Eventually tore his body up. Has had knee and back surgeries and lives on pain pills .Many companies micro manage today, you can thank UPS for that ,they were the original micro managers that all these companies try to copy UPS.Fed ex will be like a vacation compared to delivering beer. Good Luck!

You'l make a lot more money at FedEx Freight. All the beer distributors are the same. They pay you enough to keep a roof over your head and food on the table but that' it. You'll never get ahead throwing cases. Good luck getting promoted off the truck if you arent BFFs with someone in upper managment You'l be stick on a truck until you retire, and you won' make it that long with how the beer business beats you up.

P&D isn't "easy" but it'l be alot easier on your body in the long run.

I like rolling the skids to the back and saying “here you go”.

Obviously that doesn’t describe every freight delivery, but I’d also call it a safe bet on that not describing ANY beer deliveries. ;)

You have to admire beer jocks. I mean, each delivery is a precise case count. 10 cases of this brand/size, 12 cases of that brand/size etc etc etc. So you read the paperwork, pull the cases to stack on the hand truck, wheel into the store/bar, into the cooler, wait for the grunt to verify and sign for the delivery. (and hope no punk kid has helped himself to a case from your sidebox)

I remember when Budweiser in Newark NJ used to have their own Union Beer trucks. Those guys would fly through their run to go back and get a second run. Some of Those guys were older too. I remember them crashing down basement steps with full kegs like it was nothing . This was back in the 80’s and 90’s .
Those guys made great money but they earned every penny.
