Logs are required on all commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 10,001 lbs or greater.

The only exception is for local under 100 mile radius.

I drove 24' straights since '92 and haven't had to fill out logs ever. Some of the trucks had DOT numbers and weighed just under 26k.

I've been driving straight truck since '02(a tiny Isuzu stake bed and various 24' boxes) and have never filled out a log but I do fill out a "Record Of Hours".

I guarantee you if he's leased to an expedite company he's keeping a log book . If he happens to have his own authority he'd better be keeping one or he'll find himself OOS at a scale and in worse trouble when audited .

Can't help that. The law is what I stated and you have just been lucky. Want to find out how lucky you have been, pull into a scale and ask them to give you a level one.

My pickup truck that is empty after dropping a trailer somewhere, still had to have a logbook completed daily on it. The empty weight was 8,400 lbs. The GVWR was 12,200.

You don't even need a CDL for trucks under 26k. And "local Delivery" doesn't have to stop at scales. However, you may be right about pulling for an expedite company. They may require it.

There is no exception at scales for local delivery . Scale requirements vary from state to state but I have never seen a sign saying "OTR trucks must cross scales "
You DO need a CDL for any size vehicle if you are carrying hazmat requiring placarding . Some states require a CDL if you pull a trailer with a GVWR over 10,000 lbs. That would include a duallie with a GCWR of 23,000 lbs.

Is your local delivery vehicle a truck?

In Illinois, all TRUCKS over 8 tons must cross the scales.
In Ohio, Commercial vehicles of any combination over 5 tons must cross the scale.
In Wisconsin, Trucks over 6 tons.
In Iowa, Trucks over 10,000 lbs.

    I could go on.

I know up in my neck of the barren wasteland...the DOT signs say something to the effect of "all trucks hauling livestock........etc.etc.etc, and all vehicles over 10,000 must pull in.

There was actually a situation last month down in Utah, north of Ogden...huge pile up, 30+ cars / vehicles. I followed everyone and took a side highway, which one would think would bypass the scales. But even on that side highway, there was a sign saying you needed to go to the scales...I didn't. Im not sure what to do in those situations, had a fully feeling I should have gone in...and many drivers did turn off if they could.
