There is a difference between digital encryption and secure encryption. If they enable secure, you can't even hear them with a digital scanner.

    THAT would be awesome.

I wonder if that could be applied to aircraft programming approach and centers as you near them.

We tend to be a little bit behind. But laptops are used by the law here as are facial and tag recognizing cameras in the patrol cars. If you saw a patrol car, you are already on tape doing whatever it is you were doing.

As a practical matter as a concealed carry, if the law pulls up behind me and runs the tag the computer will tell them I am a potentially armed licensed carrier taking up half the screen in red for their knowledge.

At the same time, coming from Maryland and other areas where the Law is.. shall I say over enthusiastic the down home common sense converstations with the local law over the years now and then has led me to settle here for a home. Things have happened where it was sorted with a few minutes converstation rather than say pig piled, cuffed and shipped to court to sort. So many small things were taken care of before they got to be really big things. Follow me so far?

I am the one who is behind in radio etc. If there was money enough I would get back into it. But medical side challenges in life ensures that will just have to wait a while longer. So I rely on the internet which is pretty good but not THAT good yet.

Arkansas is nice, but it's a little slower than most of the other states in the Union sometimes in certain things. That is not a bad problem.

It has been available for some time. Cost more money though. Switching to the 800 mg+ trunking systems really ruined the scanner hobby for monitoring State agencies. You hear the first transmission in your location then miss out on the rest of it because the neighboring Troop, 3 counties away, covers it up. Impossible to follow a conversation unless nobody else in 20 counties or so is talking. I think our local PD is encrypted now. Everybody around here used to have a scanner, now hardly anybody does. Can't hear enough for it to be worthwhile.

I like it that way. I wish those from the big cities would stay there. Too many of them move here to escape and want to make here like where they came from??? Shows you how smart they aren't!!

You just have to upgrade to a new trunk tracking digital scanner. As long as the agency hasn't gone secure, you can still listen to a digital radio system. Even hams are allowed to use several digital modes. Just aren't allowed to go full secure.

Two state police troops here share a couple of towers. They often talk at the same time. A scanner can't broadcast two different conversations simultaneously, it would be gibberish.

Probably would sound like my wife talking when I'm trying to think.

When things are hoppin, you miss out on a lot. You can't control which transmission you hear off the tower, and the tower can handle a bunch of convos at a time. Several HP channels, CID, Narcotics, Admin. and then in our area two big troops share a couple of towers witch get heavy traffic, so most people have just quit listening to a scanner because you can't follow along on anything.

When airliners fly overseas, they switch from AM-VHF (108 to 136 mhz) to SSB shortwave. The best conversations are between the pilots and their company. Mechanical write-ups, especially repeat ones are always interesting. They also report VIPs and special needs passengers (If none, they say "no wheels, no deals").
