I have a c13 seems to do just fine in a dump truck. whoever had it before me neglected it has a little blowby the normal stuff for one with 480000 miles. I want to put a c12 in my truck, it's a 2005 378 peterbilt. every c12 iv ever driven has been pretty peppy for its size, definitely easier motor to work on ,and always seem to do good on fuel. What all would be involved in swapping a my c13 and replacing with a c12? is it all plug and play or what? Motor mounts should be the same correct? Another reason I ask is I really rather have a single turbo c13 but heck if I have to put 7000 in it to make that happen I'd rather just have what I really want.
C13 swap to a c12

I always liked the C-12's. Have two FLD120SD with 9NS C-12 in dump trucks that have 1.1 million miles on them. I wouldn't call this project plug and play. Best bet is to find a 2KS 70 pin motor. Stay away from MBL bridge engines. Very well known for shoving rod thru ECM. Mounts are the same. Coolant plumbing is close enough to work. Air to air piping is totally different. Air intake plumbing is different. Fan clutches are different.
On the other hand, the C13 ain't a bad motor. It does have usual ACERT issues, higher blowby, VVA problems and exhaust manifolds that always seem to leak @ slips. They have a longer stroke than 12's and stouter bottom end. Overhauled ones have the updated steel one piece pistons that reduce oil consumption. Has thicker cylinder head and better head bolt retention. Rockers are better designed with buttons instead of hardened ends and rocker shafts are bigger.
I have done single conversion @ overhaul time and results have been great. If turbos need replacing and Pre-Coolers is bad, single conversion doesn't seem all that expensive. It will pay for it's self in fuel. Also, a good flash file helps one that is still twinned. Have two tuned and consistently get high 6's or low 7 in dump trucks. Single turbo ones do the same on mileage. Stock ones were in mid 5's low 6's.Shawn2130, snowman_w900, Rolling18 and 1 other person Thank this. -

I had an 05 C13 in a Paystar dump truck. Thought I was going to be disappointed (would have had to wait months for a C15 build at the time) So it was pre DPF. It was awesome. Truck had a legal gross of just over 79,000 pounds. I averaged 5.3 MPG. Never had a mechanical issue with it.
And it pulled. My friend also had a Paystar, we both scaled out the same with asphalt, both had 18 speeds, 4.30 rear ratio's and 22.5 rubber. He had an ISX565 and on an 8% hill he passed me but couldn't pull away, I could stay stuck to his tailgate. Mine was set at 470/485, 1650 torque. I later had them put in the 525 field uprate.
Why not just get another C13 or rebuild that one? The C12 is a good motor too, so I guess whatever is cheaper for you. I've seen stock C12's with just the waste gate line plugged that can out pull a Series 60 500. -
Yeah I figured the intake piping and al was different just wondering electrical side of things what need to be done
What temperatures do yall see on a c13 loaded pulling a hill? mine goes 200-225 degrees. Usually it fluctuates between 190-210ish. I hooked the cat computer to it showed 180 on temp gauge but truck was running 167. so I'm thinking my temp gauge is readingin different than ecm temp gauge. And my fan never comes on. If I manually turn fan on it'll pull it right down to 180 -
Thermostat on C-13 doesn't start to open til 190F and is fully open @ 208 F. ECM doesn't command fan on for coolant temp until 217 F.

I did this swap several years ago. Not too bad. Had to fab turbo exhaust ( probably could have bought one w little effort). I think I had to use the water sensor from c13. Due to different fan hub/location, I had to turn my fan shroud upside down. Iirc, the rest was plug and play.
PS. seems like my turbo pressure gauge didn't work but I have a scan gauge that reads it fine. -
should I get the stock up-rate first Then tune, Or tune from current setup?
thanks!!

Luv my 2007 Pete 379 C13 tandem dump get almost 7mpg on a long haul and with tare weight at 22.500 can haul almost (not quite) 21 tonnes!
I pulled something in the front axle the shop cannot figure out! While on pavement crossing a 3' strip filled with GAB left steer sunk (due soaked wet) and, after powering hard reverse to get out, steering wheel was no longer centered but ####ed 1/4 turn left?
Tire(s) were in right turn prior to pull out could not straighten first due left one "wedged". Upon inspection found nothing obvious moved/broken truck drove fine after but shop now says left side off 1 inch?
Replacing SPRINGS (bent?) did not fix problem!!
Been almost a week now WAAAA WHINE I need my baby back! Any ideas?? -
Rolling 18, i have the 500hp europe tune and it pulls great and mileage went up. Im really light, 07 KW T800, 32000lb service truck, went from 335hp to 500 and mileage went from 7.5 to 9.5. Diesel dr is whom I used for the program. Im happy enough i dont plan any other mods.
