Last night, I was sitting up, looking on google maps at the roads and whatnot (its one of those loads where the shipper says, “Meet me here, and I will show you the way in”...they’re always fun), and I was thinking about the guy that wedged that truck in Nashville. That was a rookie mistake. Poor guy...he was offered the opportunity to get under a big trailer and pull a big load and now he’s in doodoo 2 miles deep.

Imagine what that felt like when that truck wedged under that bridge. Scary stuff. I always wonder when I’m gonna goof like that. Why do I think I’m going to do that? Because drivers that I thought were better than me have done it.

Off route with a superload. Hurts really bad. Bet this driver had the overwhelming urge to get out and flee. You lurkers and newer guys that dream of pulling a big trailer, this is my nightmare. I power my phone down when I’m pulling tall. I missed a turn years ago because I was on the phone and came up on an 11’6 bridge with a 14’6 load. I’m on the phone and my GPS is going crazy,RECALCULATE RECALCULATE...and there was the bridge. I had programmed turn by turn in the GPS and the GPS was right, but I was on the phone.

One of the biggest problems in the trucking industry is the lack of skilled drivers. So, all of these companies seem to think like everyone else does that it’s just driving, and you can train a monkey to drive a semi. Or in our case, train a moron, put him in a truck full of cattle prods and have a desk jockey monitor him. All companies do this. Take the dumbest driver on your team and level the playing field. If he can’t drive 2 hours without pissing his pants, set your company policy to make a mandatory 2 hour break so that Pants Pisser can have a job. Can’t have Pisser feeling discriminated against, can we? Pisser deserves to feel like a winner too...even tho he smells of piss. But, how does everyone else feel about being on level with Pee Pants Pisser?

There has been remarks made by people basically saying that the guys in this forum are arrogant and act like driving is some sort of science. Are the guys arrogant in their trade? Or are you monkey trainers putting undue faith in your monkeys? See, once they stupidproof trucking, they will make marijuana legal to use in trucks. That will be a great day for all you burnouts...the Promised Land! You can live in the truck and smoke weed! Then, the only problem will be the money will be completely gone. “Hmmm, do I want weed or do I want to eat...can’t afford to do both. What’s a fat loser to do? Decisions decisions.”

Until then, they will have to pay guys like me. They hate that. So, they got the idea to throw stupid money at me to grab a load and send others in who need help. See, I pull a stretch rgn. They will call me about a load, and send guys in to grab the other loads who’ve never pulled a stretch before. They do this because they know that I will help anyone that needs help. So, some guy shows up in a truck covered with wind stickers. A Blade #######. Want to talk about arrogant, just wait until the BBs show up. Nose in the air, won’t speak to me. That’s fine. Then when the guy either rips the air lines out of the trailer, or high centers the load across a highway or railroad, he becomes more sociable. One moment, he’s the center of the universe, the next he’s more neighborly than Mr Rogers. What’s even worse is when some plant manager comes up to me and asks me to help B.B., because B.B. high centered, blocking the exit and has all the employees trapped inside the plant property. To make it worse, the other two drivers, who idolized B.B. both get high centered too. The plant manager calls your contract and tells them that your company is never allowed on their property again.

    That hurts.

If the company was in a fiduciary predicament and a consultant was brought in, would he help for free?

It’s just something you do without expectation. I’ve done a lot of babysitting this last month, in the interest of safety. One guy still almost killed himself.

The other, well I had to come to realize there’s different calibers of drivers.

Don't worry about those blade #####es. Their work is outsourced easy enough. Saw a train go by the other day...nothing but blades. First time I've seen it, doubt it'll be the last.

That's a reflection on " Mr. Piss pants" your company manager, not you.

I'm sure losing the contract doesn't feel good.

I'm going to quote you to you.
    Luck in battle.

That's my favorite!!! "It's just driving! Anyone can do that!" If I had a buck for every time I heard that I would be doing a whole lot more riding and fishing!

I did oversize loads for 1 year. Everybody I worked with was nice, respectful, and really helpful. They never talked down to us young folks. They would always end with, this is how I do it and why. But hey you do it anyway you feel comfortable. Develop your own style. ( you know that's as nice as truck drivers get.) If you were mean to them or stuck your nose in the air. You would get oil on every spot on your truck you were supposed to pretrip... Or your truck would get blocked in by 4-6 loaded trailer..

Something we'll probably never see, that would be quite interesting, is the accident chain of events. Starting from the moment that driver got behind the wheel that day, right up to the sudden stop under the overpass. Every aviation investigation has this in the report. There's normally at least a half dozen decision points where, had a different decision been made, the accident could not have occurred. Not saying it would solve anything, but I think it would be interesting to know what specific event(s) may have been the critical departure from an otherwise uneventful trip? Could have been just like the OP - got distracted by a phone call, maybe even a fly in the cab, and missed a turn. On the other hand maybe he's just stupid and not cut out for driving big things around. All we see is the product at the end.

I concur, and also had a similar experience last week. Two sides to this. Someone who is willing to get up off their butt and offer guidance, and a wiling participant that is humble enough to not take it personally, then listen and follow directions. Gotta have both.
