Another good point for Texas.. No state income taxes.

San Antonio is a good place with lots of stuff to do around, and fairly affordable (more in the cities around than the actual city of course). Weather is not as hot and dry as farther west and not muggy as heck as toward the coast.
Austin is quite nice as well activity and job wise.

You can find some Linehaul from big hubs to big hubs ( san anton / dallas, san anton / houston, etc ) or your usual LtL P/d gigs - all the companies are in the area.

 

I had the same thing in mind when I wanted to just start new and get to somewhere I could express my interests and work in LTL still. I chose Dallas (Ft Worth) area. My company has 3 break terminals within the Dallas metro area and figured it would supply the best opportunities to move up and out of the driver seat. no matter what we have a lot of our business go through/out of that area so I chose there.

I left Tennessee and moved to Las Vegas. No regrets at all either. Yep, it gets hot, but it's a dry heat, unlike the humid heat of Tennessee. Don't really notice the temperature because it's a dry heat.
Low property taxes, no personal income taxes, no food taxes. Plenty of trucking jobs.

 

We did the same thing; spent a few months, maybe 2 or 3, researching for a new place to relocate. Narrowed it down to Austin,TX and Las Vegas,NV. Finally settled on Las Vegas. It's a great small city.

Another good one that we used was www.trulia.com. it was a simple interface allowing to map crime, schools and such. I am sure like the rest, but it was referred to us and we liked it.
