    Hi all,

My name in Keith and I'm new to this forum and this is my first post.
Right now I drive a tractor trailer for the Postal Service as a career employee. Unfortunately I barely get 36 hours a week and I can no longer afford to work there. This really sucks for me because the job I left to come to the post office was a really good paying job with lots of OT. I have a lot of experience, the right endorsements for local work, and a pristine driving record so I know I will land at least one interview.

I was looking for information on the following companies. I recently applied to them all.. Fedex freight, ABF, UPS Freight, YRC, and XPO. I'm really interested in XPO mostly because they are less then 10 minutes from my house, and they just got a union in there. Basically I want to know what pay is like for the LTL side of the house as I don't wanna go OTR. Pay, retirement, benefits, overtime etc what's it all like at these companies..

    Thanks in advance

I have an interview for Fedex freight next week. I currently am FedEx Ground right now. From my understanding from the phone call line haul is 50.5 cents mile to start and I think she said 22$ hr. Top out in 3 years.

I'm not sure you can just hire on with a union job and get everything you mentioned, at first. You may have to settle for less and work up to it. (less hrs, lousy shifts, delayed benefits etc) I caution you to "look before you leap" as the saying goes, because you mention leaving a good job to get on board with the postal service (which to me IS a good job) and now you're looking to leave that job.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't mean to come off sounding like I expect the world from a company after being newly hired. I understand how seniority works and all.. I only asked what I did because I actually like a busier company and I like the hussle. Every driving posistion I ever had paid well and that was due to me putting in the extra hours. Unfortunately when I got hired by the Postal Service I was told in orientation that I would be hired as a PTF which only guarantees 24hrs a week, me and several others almost got up and left but we were stopped by the gentleman running the orientation. He told us we wouldn't get less then 40 blah blah and we all believed him.. Basically he told us what he had to to fill the vacancies, and I screwed up by believing him. Anyway, I require a full-time job to support my family. The post office isn't capable of doing that now, and according to my supervisor it won't be anytime soon. FYI driving for the post office is a really good if you've been there a long time, or if you don't family to support. If I was ten years younger, and didn't have a baby on the way I definitely wouldn't be looking for a new job.

    1) i would have to agree here; Suggest looking for temp work and staying at the post office for now. Because i also think that you can't get much better than the post office.

    2) as far as the whole union thing; i think it totally depends on the terminal---i know people, myself included that make 50K their first year and get a pretty easy suburban type route, or easy linehaul run.

What number are you on the PTF list? If your near the bottom and you know it's gonna take years to turn Full-time Career, than yeah, you might look into other options if you aren't getting the hours. If you're near the top, and you can get some type of consistent schedule by either being on a Hold Down Position or using your seniority to choose which start times you want to be on, than I would encourage you to look for some type of part-time job until you're Full-time Career. We had many PSE's (that's before the new contract went into effect) that would Jockey at Amazon Part-time until they FINALLY turned Full-time Career. Believe me, there's no other job out there where you can make the type of money, or not have to worry about DOT regulations, like you can at the Postal Service, once you turn Full-time Career.

Being a PTF at the Postal Service is not something everybody can handle. Yeah the work is easy, but you are required to work any days and shifts that you are needed. Not every barn is run the same way either. Some places you get unlimited OT, and others you'll hardly get any OT (which seems to the case at your barn). If you give up your job to go into LTL, there's no guarantee that it'll be any better either, because you may start off as a Casual or On Call Extra Board, waiting by phone trying to get any type of work. I know next month, we're suppose be getting a ton of new work because of all the Contracted runs going back in house. So it may get a little better for you. Plus Peak Season is coming soon and you'll definitely be getting a ton of work during the holidays.
