Let them go, leaves more freight for those of us who don't need to lie on the logs to get the job done.

This whole ELD thing makes me laugh. I guess if my situation was different I wouldn't see it the same way. I ran local for the first 10 years of my driving career. Then did two years OTR, working with Elogs. And I can't say I minded it too much. It really wasn't an issue to me. But, I wasn't dealing with the dry van or reefer nonsense. I pulled tanker, so sitting at a dock waiting 4 hours for two pallets to be pulled off wasn't an issue for me.
I'm running tanker locally now for the last 8 years, but we have a run that does require us to log it. It takes about 12.5 hours to run the trip, and is around 600 miles. I run it once or twice a week at most, to avoid going over the 8 days in a 30 day period, which then requires Elogs.
My bss hired an older guy (who ran his own truck OTR until December 18) to run this route daily, gave him an older, but very well maintained, eld exempt truck. Two weeks into the deal, he drives around a road closed sign, into high water and swamps the truck. Bent the frame of the truck in the process. (He still has a job too!) Long story short, he was given a slightly newer truck, (05 T600) and an Elog to go with it. He's now running that truck locally, doing 3 loads a day, and going home daily. All because he doesn't want to run an Elog.
So, I'm now running my daycab 600 miles a night twice a week, begging for the elog, so I can run that trip daily.
It's ludicrous to me that this other ''driver" simply won't use an Elog, for a run that barely meets the requirements for even needing one. The chances of him getting stuck somewhere out of hours is almost zero. And even if he does run out of hours on any given day, it's a moot point, because he was staying in the truck all week anyways, and can only haul five loads a week, because that's all that there is to haul.
It's ludicrous! I told the boss to put the elog in my truck and turn me loose. I'd actually have the ability to make more money that way.
You gotta learn how to work with the changes, whether you agree or not. (I don't agree with Elogs either, but it is what it is)
Either be willing to adapt to change, or you will be a unwanted commodity. It's that simple.tucker and bryan21384 Thank this. -
I can't say I am in love with the elog but they need to have some flexibility at least get rid of the half hour break and the 14 hour rule ... when I started out I ran with 3 drivers license and 2 log books and I feel a lot less safer now with the timer in the truck before the timer if I was tired I would take a nap so now you have to fight the timer and keep going. ... a lot of times you can't stop to eat a decent meal even if you had the time because you don't know what will happen down the road to delay you. I really haven't seen to many people get out of it because of the e log and I am 60 years old so I am not going anywhere else. .... but I useually running 500 miles or less in the daytime .. avoid the northeast and California and other places that parking is a problem or the dot are ########. . I don't deliver anything to sanctuary cities or sanctuary states ... and if you guys care to look it up the sanctuary bs all are anti truck places without parking and picky cops ... basically if you wanted to carry it out a little bit the areas under democrats useually are anti trucks so I say to bad let someone else haul there stuff and for the most part the loads coming out of Democrat areas don't pay anything .... there are exceptions but as a general rule and I think it's mostly from the anti buisness policy of the Democrats. .. this may sound somewhat silly to avoid that much of the country but since doing this have actually made more money and far less bs and I am dealing with far less ######## at receivers..

The elog is not the problem, its the hos. I like elog honestly, less for me to worry about and incase of a pushy employer it is a verified piece of equipment that has my back.
If you need to run illegal to make money and/or get home you need a better company, to pre-plan/work more efficiently, or both.UsualSuspect and bryan21384 Thank this. -
Now, with all of that said, my problem with Elogs is that I am forced to pay for them and manage them when my company does not have a history of HOS violations or unsafe driving. I could get behind Elogs for repeat HOS offenders.Last edited: May 17, 2018
