Can you obtain a class A CDL w/ E Restriction to avoid manuals legally. I'm not sure if trucking companies look down on this, but is it possible. I mean from day one out of the school if you always request an automatic or even go straight to lease owner once you graduate doesn't the class A CDL E Restriction support how you are an automatic driver only.

And as a driver since I literally do not care and prefer auto over Manuel any day of the week isn't it my driving preference that should matter regardless of any type of pay decrease based on that class E Restriction.

Yes you can but why would you if you know how to drive a manual. Seems like taking the long way around the barn when the doors are open, you need just to look for a company that accommodates your wants.

I no longer can drive Manuel or ever liked driving Manuel in regular cars (given semi trucks are 100% different) so why would I want to be trained during class A CDL classes when I will never drive a Manuel on the open road and always end up leasing and or using company automatics upon request.

Just self-restrict...but know that by doing so, you leave a lot of doors closed. Just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you MUST do it! The more endorsements and the less restrictions you have on your license, the more options you have going forward. Suppose a great opportunity presented itself, but they need an answer quickly. They have 2 applicants: 1 is ready to go right now today, and the other has to make a trip to the DMV to add an endorsement or remove a restriction. Which do they choose? A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush...they'll go with the "qualified" driver over the driver that may or may not be able to meet their requirements nearly every time.

OP, do you choose not to drive a manual or are you unable to?
If you're unable to is it because of a medical condition or are you just incapable of driving something with a manual shift?
I think an employer would be asking this same question.

You're the boss as far as what you drive. Don't need a restriction, just tell any company you drove auto's only by choice and if the company will accommodate you, fine, but if not, you'll keep shopping around.
Most companies are switching to auto's anyway, so it shouldn't be a problem. Some specialty companies such as heavy haul will stick with stick shifts though.
I was reading about a company yesterday that is now fully automatics and has some good films on their website about the transmissions they now use.

Just do what another new driver did about 2 months ago. Simply lie to your future employer that “oh yes I can shift and drive a stick..” just to get that dream job. Then the weekend before watch YouTube videos on how to do it.
