Thinking of purchasing a older Tractor that has a non-steerable lift axle. Does anyone know which year is the cutoff that makes it mandatory to have a steerable lift axle?

I don't know of mandatory steerable lift axle law? My 2016 has 20000lb non steer on it.
TiCreek Thanks this. -
I know if you add the tag axle now it must be a steerable axle but I was wondering if there's any law on the books that says you have to change them out or are they grandfathered in. Just didn't want to buy a truck that was set up then find out I have to replace the tag. My whole reason for buying a truck is for the tag that's already installed

Who says it had to be a steerable?

Be curious to see this “law” in print.

Look at his profile: it's a NY state law.
OP: I am not super familiar with those laws regarding exemptions, I'll call a friend and have you a answer shortly.
You're wanting to know about upstate permits only? Or upstate and downstate?Lon76 Thanks this. -
Alright he only had specific info for divisible load overweight permits: any power unit pre 2005 build date can utilize steerable or non steerable lift axles until 2020.
2006 and later power units must have steerable for any lift axle.
After 2020 any lift on any unit must be steerable.
Now this is all divisible load permits under the Infrastructure Friendly Act.
Look on the NYS dot website or call the permit office and ask.Cat sdp, lynchy, Oscar the KW and 2 others Thank this. -
