The VDO solo that I have has no monthly cost but all the logs are stored on an off site VDO sever that VDO owns and maintains.
I was hopeful that the info would be stored by me in my office as the states but this is not the case.
As I write this I had a VDO hardware failure today where the screen is black and it won’t power up.
Tried to trouble shoot with VDO today and in the end they are sending me a new device.
So now I have to run paper till I get home.
Here’s the fun part in the last seven days that I have to create on paper by memory I picked up 6 cars at six separate locations in ny and then drove to Florida and unloaded 6 cars at six separate locations and then reloaded 6 more cars at yet 6 more different locations.
That’s 18 different stops at 18 different locations.
I tried working on it earlier but became frustrated because it’s just to much to remember with that many stops to recreate logs from 7 days ago.
Because my VDO doesn’t have cellular connectivity my last seven days are locked in a box with a black screen and I don’t think I will ever be able to recover the information that’s in there.

That does suck. In the future I would print at the end of the day or carry my laptop with me so I can insert the driver key daily to upload.

I thought that VDO had a local only storage option, maybe that went away with the AOBRD version. This makes me question how they are going to support the data storage and retrieval costs in perpetuity without monthly user fees. That was one of their earlier selling points, no fees.
At Pedigree they store data indefinitely, even after you terminate your contract, but only release what is legally required meaning 6 months of logs and up to 7 years to support fuel tax.
This brings me to a point, while selecting an ELD provider make sure you understand their data access and storage policies, some delete the data the moment your contract expires even though you may need access long after that for record retention and audit support. Also, make sure they can and will support you during audits and legal proceedings. Pedigree has experts that can testify to the accuracy and authenticity of the data collected by their platform and help you defend your use of their systems.

Mine actually is still on the aobrd platform.
The new one they are sending is an eld.
The end of the road for the VDO aobrd program is June 30
So I would have had to change over with in 30 days anyway.
They also have told us we need to print all the info off the VDO aobrd portal because on June 30 all the info will gone and that server will be shut down.
I think I paid around 700 dollars for the original unit and the eld is a free upgrade they call it lol.
Sure makes you wonder how they will be able to maintain a lifetime worth of logs on there own maintained server with no monthly maintenance charge?

Exactly my thoughts. Sucks they are shutting down the AOBRD program, you specifically chose their device for the AOBRD functionality and the flexibility that gave you.
Idea for you, maybe you can get an AOBRD from another provider since you met the deadline of having one in use prior to Dec. 18, you are eligible to replace with equivalent until 2019.

Yes, I have to a little looking to see if anything is still available.
By the way my first drop is in Monticello tomorrow.
It ought to be a real barrel of laughs running the gauntlet across 84 from Scranton to Middletown with my 18 stop recreated log book.
I talked with Ooida today who say they are seeing people being put out of service for 10 hours with recreated log books after an eld failure even though that’s what the law requires you to do.

Lucky you! Yes, there have been reports of OOS mistakes, hope you don't have any issues. You are coming thru Trooper Spak's home territory and he is a royal pita. Driving right past my house, I live less than 2 miles from exit 34 in Lords Valley.
If you want to avoid both the PA scales at the 26 and the NY scales in Middletown take route 6 out of Scranton into Honesdale, continue thru Hawley and take 434 thru Shohola into NY. Then take 55 to 17B i to Monticello. Mostly 2 lane and will add about an hour but it is car hauler friendly and usually DOT free.

    Hey thanks a bunch!
I’m going to follow that route.
I’m just to uncomfortable with this recreated log book.

I used it often, was a regular thing for me to start at Gibbons Ford in Dickson City and finish out at M&M in Liberty or Rea in Monticello. Let me know if you have any issues, I'm home and bored.
Heading to bed, have a good night.
