It's bit me on the ###, and it's also worked out well. For every seven o'clock phone call, "yeah, my driver wants to know if we have to have special permits for this?", I have had ten guys with new authority work out.

They came recommended, but what did YOU think when you talked to them?

It's not a matter of taking a chance. It's a matter of you needing to get the load moved NOW, and none of those 'established fleets' that you work with has a truck in position to get it done.

Opinions mean nothing, this is the real world and we deal with actions and results. Maybe you will be in business long enough to understand that. Or maybe your ego will get in the way and you will not.

You still have not answered my question. What makes you so special that I should load you over anyone else?

Your original comment said that you hired drivers based on the recommendation (opinion) of them that you got from others, and that many of those drivers didn't live up to those opinions. So, it would seem that you really don't live by your own statement that opinions mean nothing.

As I stated before, the fact that I have a truck with HOS hours available that's 10 minutes away from your shipper, and you can't find anyone else that is available that can get that load moved and delivered on time for you. That's what makes me special in that case.

So you bring nothing that every other carrier cannot provide. I find it laughable actually that you title this thread about JB Hunt being special because they won't use you. You have yet to name a single reason that anyone SHOULD use you. Why should I load you over one of my own trucks? HOS does not make you "special" or give me a reason to load you. Why should I load you vs. just reschedule the shipment for someone else?
If HOS is all you have I won't even waste my time sending you a setup packet.

Sometimes you just know when you're talking with someone that isn't BS'ing. I know I do. You have to talk your way around obstacles or they do dealing with you. Maybe its confidence I dunno? Surely you brokers talk to enough carriers and drivers that are FOS and sound sketchy as hell that you can tell when you're talking to someone that is legit? You have to sell that person or they have to sell to you. People with instant decision making authority on anything are the best.

Oh, absolutely. I would say that I have a pretty well refined BS detector. Point I was trying to make is that occasionally someone slips by- they talk a good game, or what have you. The example I gave in the previous question- gal confirmed the dims on an OD Power only, sounded super professional, and then agreed that they could do the load, after verifying that they had done OD loads before. This was at 9AM. Got packet back, and a signed rate con. Everything seems hunky dory.

Then I get a call at 7PM asking about permits. Keep in mind that this was supposed to pick up the next morning. She cancels on me at 7:30 via email and ignores my phone calls for the next thirty minutes. Found her boss's number, and then proceeded to let him have it. Was still able to recover it fairly quickly, but it's the principle of the thing.

99% of the time, though, you can tell if someone isn't going to be able to handle a deal. I've turned away more than a few new carriers on that basis.

I swear there's just something about a way an agent will speak, or the tone, the phrases they use perhaps, and I know it's gonna be a hassle.

There's a few that are good agents that down play certain dismal aspects about a load, but I've also dealt with them, and know what I'm getting into.

Out of 4 or 5 in Pennsylvania, there's only 1 I'd ever pull for again, and July 1st Pennsylvania wants 3% business tax, so I doubt I'll pick up or deliver anything there until I read the rants on here about how some Pennsylvania entity put it in your ### or not.
