    Yeah, but...

    We're talking "real" life.

    Like in real life...

Does anyone really do the pre-trip inspection covering all points required to pass that portion of the CDL test... EVERY DAY?
    LOL

I've heard that it's just under 14 feet. Find a low bridge, pull up to it and stop just short, climb out on the bridge and repair the light. What's the problem?

If all the lights are out, chances are its an issue in the trailer plug. Likely wouldn't even have to climb up on anything.

    Normally...

That's the kick, but this time...

It's a problem with the wiring up top that can only be accessed from inside the trailer requiring the seal to get broken and the temp to drop below the continuous setting meaning... permission from the shipper!

(Slaps forehead... for my "friend"! LOL)

I’m thinking the same, or a popped fuse. Those wires are usually isolated pretty well up top and protected from damage.

The sealed trailer does add a level of difficulty. One clearance light is not a problem with the plug or fuse, but all of them going out could be. Do they make battery-powered lights you could stick on up there for temporary use?

I once used a blinky flashlight wrapped in a red flag for the rear flashing marker on a transfer train (not going far) when I didn't have a real FRED. We didn't get put away, but federal railroad inspectors only work 9-5. Anything that happens after 5 is safe by default according to the FRA.

lights out are a STUPID thing to get a ticket for. (along with tires, papers/registration and dragging on the catwalk air lines/electrical)

these are super obvious things that can easily seen by anyone.

we all know that if DOT wants to find something they will. But by god I'm not giving them a free one.

Not really. A quick and dirty fix would be to run a wire on the outside of the trailer from the electrical box to the clearance lights. After the sealed and cold load gets delivered then get it fixed correctly.
