So they can check all your paper work and enter it in their computer and then print you a ticket...

I get that they have to enter information but afterwards before you go in they could tell you hey this axle weighs this much if it's too heavy. I just find it too be a really weird way to do things.

Duh. Youre too heavy. They are fixing to write tickets against either yourself or your company or both for the overweight axle or over gross. It will also generate a pretty good inspection also. It will be a while.

Park it, hop out get all your papers whatever they are, go straight inside.

Whatever enforcement happens will happen inside there.

That's because you did not go straight to a local CAT Scale nearest the shipper or public weight scale and check to confirm that you are axle and gross weight legal.

Hit a DOT scale that's open being heavy? TSK TSK TSK. too late.

I meant at the cat scales. Not the weigh station. Like when you pay for it.

THESE axles plural weigh THIS MUCH AND.... add THIS TICKET will cost you this much. Let's see your papers. And prepare yourself for a proper inspection outside it's a very good possibility.

So you pay for the ticket, then adjust yourself while they process other trucks wanting to be weighed. And then you reweigh for confirmation and an additional, but lesser, fee?..... I think everyone would like it if they said 'You're all set driver! Hammer down! No charge!' Or 'You need to slide the tandems forward 2 holes then you can get right on out of here! - Oh, and you can do it right on the scales, no problem!'...... Getting you to pay for the service just rendered you seems logical.... What were you expecting?
