Looking at the built in meter, looks like modulation is set at about 30%. Can that be turned up without taking it to a hack shop and wasting money?

I never put much stock in the built in meter. Still a virgin radio?

Admittedly not as pretty to look at, but eyes focused on the road won't notice.Last edited: Aug 22, 2018
Highwayman1224 and skellr Thank this. -
My 959b seems to have a good receiver. I need to get it to a shop to have a “by the book” alignment and tune done (no hack, whack pac, super dooper mod kit). Just want it to work as designed.
I did turn vr16 up a bit. Meter now reads around 70% modulation when I’m talking. -
I also love the weather alert feature that, if you turn it on, will automatically switch to the local weather channel and alert you of impending bad weather in your area if NOAA has decided you need to be alerted. I also love the front firing speaker and front mounted mic jack. It allows for seamless installation into a DIN slot for a radio in the dash.
Another feature it has that almost no radios have is adjustable RF output and that works very well. If you are really close to another station and don't need 4 watts out you can turn it way down to even a quarter of a watt or anything up to 4 watts. It's really a feature filled radio and worth the money.
It has a unique way of helping you set the SWR in that it beeps and the faster it beeps the lower your SWR. It worked really well with my basic ground plane antenna but it gets tricked with the NGP antenna I have now so I have to use an external SWR meter. But for setting SWR its neat because you don't need to be near the radio. Set it to SWR and it starts beeping. Tune the antenna slowly until you hear the beeping get faster and faster and once it hits a steady tone you're at 1:1. No need to see the radio at all and no need to key the mic. As one reviewer stated, simple yet brilliant.Last edited: Aug 24, 2018
