Maybe an attorney needs to come up with a standard contract that basically says applicant will pay their way out to orientation once an invitation and signed contract is received, however, if for any reason (besides pre-employment drug screen positive, or failing a road test) applicant is rejected by carrier at/during orientation, carrier must provide $x.xx in cash to cover transportation costs back to applicants hometown.
This helps insure applicant is serious, and keeps the carrier honest and from playing too many games in orientation.
But as a carrier, I may also insist the applicant show a medical card and long form less than 30 days old. Too many people out here who are way past borderline being able to pass a DOT medical.
Furthermore, in my business, applicants would have to pass a basic math, problem-solving, and reading skills assessment.

I can't understand why companies don't check everything out before bringing drivers to orientation. In my opinion, they should flip the money to send him home. You already flipped the money to bring him out there, so why should he suffer because the company didn't take care of business prior to bringing him halfway across country? I don't see why anybody would invite prospective employees to orientation eyes wide shut, and decide to check everything out after you've brought them out there? What sense does that make? They could cut out a lot of time by vetting before spending the money on rental cars, plane tickets, Greyhound, etc.
hauler881, already gone, bzinger and 2 others Thank this. -
All we can do is assume the driver in this case is being honest about the circumstances that led to his release. I've been around long enough to know, you have to take all "impossible to verify stories" with a strong sense of skepticism

Why not do it all before the trip???
See this happen to people countless times, but usually the carrier at least sends them back.
I mean last time I renewed my hazmat, the did my fingertips on a piece of glass, they pop up on computer screen, and click, off they go.
I will never understand that go to orientation then get turned away, unless it's failed drug test.bryan21384 Thanks this. -
