Rail pigs were around up until the mid 2000's IIRC. I remember them moving when I started my job at a small domestic intermodal broker back in 2005. They were phased out for 48/53 COFC and then eventually even the 48's were done away with for an all-53 fleet.

I've been pulling 20/40 ocean cans for awhile and without a doubt the worst part of the job is the junk chassis'. Pier work can pay okay if you have the patience for it but you need a reliable trailer to put those suckers on or you're gonna waste a lot of time on chassis-chases, sitting in roadability getting fixed, or broken down on the side of the road because a Chinese tuber went boom or a worn out slack adjuster screwed itself down and started a brake BBQ

And don't forget they pop rivet the lights on, so you have to break it to replace it, only to find the plug came off a perfectly good light.

I don't know off the top of my head but I think around 50-$150. Fine is not the problem it's a DOT reported offense stays on yours and company's record. Not worth it for $2 for a pack of ties. Or just use wire
