Tractor-trailer scrapes roof, gets stuck under Upper Macungie
UPPER MACUNGIE TWP., Pa. - Police say a tractor-trailer was traveling east on Schantz Road in Upper Macungie Township early Tuesday when it struck the underside of the Norfolk Southern Railroad bridge.
Although the bridge has numerous signs warning of a height restriction of 11'6, officials say the driver reported he misread the signs thinking they said 13'8.
The driver told police his truck's height was 13'6, which was also printed on the side of the trailer. The tractor-trailer was towed due to the severe damage to the top of its tractor from striking the bridge.
Police say Norfolk Southern was notified to check on the bridge.
The driver suffered no injuries.
Helwig thought the 11'6" sign actually said 13'8"

How do you get that far under... Gee what's the loud banging and scrapping a noise? The truck seems to be shaking violently...I don't know maybe I need to apply more diesel.

Look at that big hole on the side of the trailer as well. I wonder is that lady on the phone with safety or Greyhound

Notice how a concrete and steel structure resisted the impact of an hollow aluminum vessel traveling a ramming speed. According to NTSB....it could have sliced through steel like a knife through butter.

Maybe it's 11'6 on that side but 13'8 on the other.

She can relate but she makes it look better and less embarrassing ...
