It depends on the law man at hand of course. I ain't sure what they can do to you for not having it. However my son got by about 8 months without his actual license. In Arkansas you have to have your birth certificate to get a replacement at the local revenue office. That is something he lost right after moving out. So it took a trip to vital records in Little Rock. Again he is lazy about stuff like that, or maybe afraid of missing money at work I'm not sure. Any way, he got 1 warning in all that time outta being asked for it probably 10 times in several states. He just gave them all a recent lost story haven't been home yadda yadda.

Depends on the officer on the spot. You have a copy to prove you have one. Cop will run your numbers like usual. Then either give you ticket for not in possession. Or tell you to make sure you get a new one quick. If you get the ticket hire a lawyer. Or go to court and explain to prosecutor/judge. You will either get a f8ne or walk.

Name, (first, middle initial, last), DOB, and state your license is issued through should be sufficient for any officer to run to verify a valid license. SSN can work as well. Unless systems are down. I mean, stuff happens, most cops are reasonable as long as you are reasonable.

That is a good question. I have to hand over my cdl to the grocery consignees I deliver to. They enter the information into the computer and hand it back to me. However before I leave the guard house or holding area I always double check my wallet to ensure my cdl is secure in my wallet. That does not mean I could not lose it in a truck stop. When I get back from vacation I think I will make a copy of my cdl and have the copy notorized in case I ever do lose it. At least I will have something to show the DOT if I get pulled in.

Yes I have had drivers lose their CDL.

Oone of them the girl at the shipper shredded it with the other paper work she messed up, they paid for the cost of getting another one, I had to go to our local SoS and have them issue another one when they confirmed it was the right guy, he used Skype to show it was him. Then I had it Morning delivery FedEx to him - that wasn't cheap. I sent them a $565 bill for my time, mileage and costs and they paid.

Another driver lost his wallet (it was later returned to him 8 months later with the money in it) again I had to help out, went to the DMV in Ohio, talked to the manager there and we got a temp license, then I had to have it couriered out to him, which wasn't cheap at all. He needed ID to get moving asap.

Now where i used to live, I think I had ghosts in the house.

No one in the house except my dogs and cats, my keys hanging on the hook at the back door and then they are gone.

The cats running around the place and dogs barking for a few minutes, then silence.

I go to get my keys to get into the garage and they are gone. I tear the house apart, look even in the kids rooms, and can't find them. NO where to be found. Before my wife came home, I heard something drop on the floor in the bedroom, it was my keys.

I had my cdl renewed because in Texas when you have a new medical card to update, they need to get paid their money as well... which means my beautiful original cdl with me cheesing ear to ear has been replaced by a haggard, worn out from the road and unshaven 45lb heavier me, with less hair on my head than my chin.

Anyway, Texas cuts your cdl in half and prints you a paper copy of the new one to use until the new one comes in the mail.

Not wanting to fold it, I stuck it in the giant glovebox of the truck I was slipseating. And you guessed it... someone used that truck the very next day when I was doing a rare interstate run to schlumberger or whatever the hell their name was. Got pulled in in Texas, they ran my numbers and said get another copy quick. Sent me on my way. Got to Louisiana and got pulled in again... and told I wasn’t leaving in that truck without it, and I would be leaving in silver bracelets if that other driver didn’t come to the open scale in our rickety piece of #### equipment to deliver my paper cdl.

Took him about 8 hours to get there after his normal day was done and you guessed it, they inspected him when they heard an airleak and put his truck out of service. But I got to leave.
