High heat or extreme cold is exactly what synthetic oil shines in!

Synthetic oil doesn't break down in the heat like conventional oil will.

15w-40 conventional oil in a Volvo has caused many people lots of problems. Soot packing is just one.

If you still desire a 40wt oil, the preference would be 5w-40 synthetic.

    Bingo, case in point !!

    Thumbs up !!

So I replaced both caps on coolant reservoir and there was no change. Normally I’m home on weekends but because I’m taking off around the holiday I won’t be home till Tuesday, then I’ll work on the boost leaks around the egr piping and replace the CAC. Will post the outcome. I know y’all said the temp is normal but with regards my truck I’ll respectfully disagree because I’ve own this truck for many year through many summers, it now has 1117475 miles on it. On a normal summer day, driving on flat with about 40k is always reading between 180-190 coolant temp. I know there’s a problem because she’s never ran this hot. This week twice I had to pull off climbing a hill and wait for it to cool off due to high temp warning coming on, and didn’t want to overheat my engine. Today only 7k lbs in the Box coming from Brownsville, Tx on flat road is flirting with 210 coolant temp all the time, making fan run most of the time causing fuel mileage to drop significantly. I promise I’ll find the problem and will update this thread to help out the next D16 guy or girl looking for resolution to same issue.
In the meantime I want thank all for the response!

Are you pushing any coolant out?

I haven’t been loosing any coolant unit for the first time yesterday I had to put about a quarter of a gallon coolant in my tank. It looks like it was puking from the overflow and splash in front of engine while I’m driving, That prompted me to change both caps on the reservoir, since then coolant level hasn’t dropped but the high temp still exist.

If it's first gen EGR cooler, in front of engine, most likely it's leaking. Being 07, they were the worst coolers.

Another possibility is sticking EGR valve (open) causing high flow through the cooler and heat saturation of coolant. This is also bad scenario because a cracked cooler will follow soon usually.

Have you seen any high EGR temp codes?

Pushing coolant is why it's getting hot, you're displacing coolant with air....most likely case.
    Hopefully it's not a HG.

This scenario you just described makes a lot of sense to me. Unfortunately I’m not getting any codes whatsoever, except when I had to pull off due high coolant warning and I cleared it before I started rolling again. Other than that I haven’t received any codes since this problem started few weeks ago. I will be working on it after th holiday, fix boost leak and replace the CAC. While I’m at it I’ll remove the egr cooler and valve and see. And yes I have the egr cooler mounted in front of the engine. Thanks for the input, I feel like your description might be my problem. I’ll post my findings.

    Update:
It seems the work I did have solved my overheating problem. It’s been over a week and all good. Running much cooler and watching the oil temp up hill with 42k it never went above 230. The fan kicks on at 210 and goes off when it suppose to, it not staying on forever like it was doing. Installed manual fan switch but honestly I haven’t had to use it, yet still glad I installed it, kudos to KB3MMX!
I will post if anything comes up in relation to this problem and I hope this helps out someone with similar problem.

What exactly did you do? Did you pull the EGR? I am assuming the fan is programmed to kick on at 210? For some odd reason I was thinking mine kicked on much sooner.
How do you guys find boost leaks? Is there a trick to it?
    Thanks!
