    2004 Volvo VNL 780 Cummins ISX 565

At first My truck was having problems building and holding air, it would go up to only 80 psi while driving and when slowing down or completely stopped it would then drop down to 60 psi and under to the point then the fan clutch kicks in, so I drove like that until I got to a mechanic shop but once I got there and I completely stopped I noticed that my fan clutch stopped working even under 60 psi, so I thought it was just a air issue. So the next day mechanic calls truck is done, it was main hose lines coming from the air compressor to the dryer, now truck builds air and holds air. But I noticed once I got back home and turned off the truck that I could spin the fan clutch easily it was freewheeling. So I went on the road to test the truck turned on the a/c it did not work, driving 67 highway speed.

So if the fan clutch goes bad, does it effect the a/c even when I am driving highway speeds

Also is there a quick fix for the fan clutch freewheeling

Also does the air compressor have any connection with the a/c system, because the mechanic did change a couple of air lines.

    Help Me Understand

Dont know much on Volvos. If it's free while off and isn't usually that way, probably solenoid went bad. Or mechanic messed with it and got the lines backwards. Drain all the air from your tanks. Still free? Then your fan clutch is bad. If it grabs, then look at the solenoid and lines.

Sounds like you burned the fan clutch up from running low on air. With low air pressure, the clutch drags. Your truck should have a valve that doesn't allow air to the fan clutch until 80-90 psi, 60 is too low. Anything below 80 PSI and you're risking the fan clutch dragging, at 60-70, it's definitely not fully releasing it and burning up the clutch.

Unplug the air line going to the fan. If there is no air pressure at the fan hub, it should be locked. If it still spins free, you have a bad fan hub. If the fan hub is working, post back and we can walk you through checking the fan solenoid.

I unplugged the air line that’s going into the fan hub and I still can spin it easily

Thanks guys now we know 100% that the fan clutch went bad, now what I want to understand is why my ac stopped working. Usually when I am traveling at highway speeds and my ac is on the fan clutch doesn’t have to be on, is it because of the fan clutch went bad now even if I am driving highway speed the A/C stopped working

With out the fan clutch pulling air while stopped, your A/C pressure and temperature probably spiked. I don’t know much on Volvo, but some truck systems have a over pressure switch that shuts off the A\C in events like that. This switch could be stuck or a computer is holding it off. Hopefully you didn’t burn anything else up. When you get your fan clutch fixed, Your A/C will work just fine or it won’t. But you won’t know till then...

A couple things that come to mind.

First off you should never ever drive with the air getting below 80 psi with a leak. That puts you and everyone else in danger with reduced air pressure on the brakes.

Second is this, while a few are right about how it works, the air fan is controlled by the ECM and the A/C is controlled by the Body computer. I won't get into detail of what does what but if you have air up to the solenoid, and NO A/C, chances are the Body computer is the problem or the controls or something that has to do with it not telling the compressor to engage or telling the ECM that the A/C is on.
