ELD causes truck to turn off?

I had a similar electrical shutdown in a Pete 386 I drove. 10:30 pm in a curve, no moonlight, engine, lights, everything shut down. I had to get the truck stopped dead stick on residual air pressure with no lights and couldn't see a d-mned thing. I got lucky.

Mine was an electrical control module problem. Possible yours is the same and just happened to coincide with the new setup. I'm no expert, but all these plug-in dongles do is tap into speed sensor signal to tell the ELD via Bluetooth whether the truck is moving.

It is possible, however unlikely, that this may somehow cause an open circuit fault in the speed sensor circuit and cause the ECM to wig out. However, I'm thinking this is an electrical control failure, or perhaps something was damaged in the the removal of the Omnitracs.

So, I wonder if it might be possible that the device loses contact with the network long enough that it tricks the system into thinking idle shutdown is necessary, and does it anyway? Just a thought.

 

We run Peoplenet on our fleet. We've had issues with it on trucks with automatic transmissions. Apparently the road speed is read by the peoplenet thru the TCM (transmission control module) on trucks with auto shift transmissions. It causes an overload of data flowing thru the port and causes the transmissions to shift into neutral and lock down while the trucks are going down the road. The only way to reset it is to have the driver coast to a complete stop (hopefully they make it onto the shoulder), turn off the ignition and let it sit for several minutes. Only then will the transmission shift out of neutral. It's happened several times so far on 3 of our trucks (all '16 Pete 579s with Paccar engine and Eaton 12 speed auto-shift trans).

 

That is scary and down right dangerous something is going hay wire in your truck that's for sure, going to have to get the computer boffins out and the electrician to sort this one out.

 

Sounds like a loose connection in your diagnostic port or possibly a short circuit in the device itself. Apparently it thinks it has been removed.

 

I have the same fealing, that eld cause this problem. I have keeptracking, truck started doing the same things as yours. I found a different thread explaining my problem:

I would contact HQ about issue, quickly get a new one, then see if other drivers are experiencing the same issue, I for one wouldn’t drive that rig until issue is fixed.
