Team Pay Question From A Newbie: How, Not How Much

    My best friend and I are finishing up school in Phoenix. Long story short...I am a retired police officer. No drugs, no drinking, no criminal record. He is similar. We have multiple job offers, but the recruiter is "semi evasive" when I ask a few specific questions.

    Yes...I did search the site and didn't find the answer.

    Do teams "generally"...I know there must be differences in companies...but "generally" do teams get paid on a 50/50 split for all the miles driven as the team, or if one of us gets a few more miles do they split it that way?

    I am fairly sure the day guy would have more admin to do at stops, etc...so I was just wondering.

    Thank you in advance for the answers.

    P.S. I did NOT work traffic or commercial enforcement. I think I wrote fewer tickets in a year than most guys did in a month!

    The team gets paid cpm for all dispatched miles. The pay is split 50/50 and it doesn't matter which of you is driving.
    If the truck has a 2000 mile run, both drivers will be paid for 2000 miles. You're paid while you're driving and paid the same while you're sleeping and the other guy is driving.

    we did our research before, if you guys both have hazmat , 52 cpm is usually the start out pay. there is a company called Total Transportation Of Mississippi that would pay 60 cpm

    We are coming out with A, B, Tanker, and HazMat. I know the school is trying to sell us on the company they headhunt for and offering a $5k per driver sign-on, etc...but I want to keep my eyes open and read the fine print before we accept any offers.

    yea we were fresh just like that 3 months ago (have all the endorsements) but honestly, dont over think it, just pick something, drive for one year or 2 and then move on to work for a better company like old dominion, saia, r&l carrier (for teams) or might get you guys your own truck

    Check with Old Dominion Freight Lines; they hire new cdl grads and run teams. Ask if they hire from the school you attended. It's possible to make $125K for each driver at Old Dominion.

    All the above hire new cdl grads, even if the website has "experience required."
    In fact, a new cdl grad posted this week that Lily Transportation just hired him for team runs hauling produce out of California and back to the east coast.
    Apply to all those companies for team runs, even if you don't think they'll hire you.

    I was an owner operator team, we just split the money. Didn’t keep track of who drove how far.
    Some of the company teams would keep track of the exact odometer miles, they would just stop the truck in the craziest places as the guys miles were up and it was the other guys turn to drive.

    It could just be my suspicious cop nature, but when I hear recruiters say things like "Team drivers are worth their weight in gold" and "You can make up to $75k your first year" or "We're working to improve" my Spidey Senses tingle a bit.

    I figure on having to eat the proverbial poop sammich when I am out with my road trainer before my buddy and I pair up...so, I am mentally prepared for that. I had a year of field training out of the academy with an old salt training officer who's job it was to crush your soul...I can handle it. I just want to make the best choice out of a bunch of mediocre ones.

    I hope the recruiter meant $75K for each driver.
    Keep in mind, cents-per-mile is only part of the pay equation. There's also accessorial pays on top of cents-per-mile.
