I'm driving a KW 680 and the stock radio is not an SXM radio so I would like to buy one of the portable ones but I'm not sure what kind of external antenna to buy or where and how to install the antenna.
If anyone is using an external antenna on a 680, I would appreciate it if you could tell me what kind of antenna you have, the performance of the antenna and how and where you installed it.
If you could please provide a pic also.
I'm getting tired of finding a new station to listen to every 50 miles so any help you could give me would be much appreciated.

The easiest solution is to use a quality 3M exterior automotive trim tape (2 sided stick) and affix a puck style antenna to the top of the driver side mirror and run the coax behind the mirror, and along the mirror arm with black tape or other means, and inside the door jamb.
This will stand up to washes and high wind if done properly.Last edited: Aug 18, 2018
My Dog Thanks this. -
Unless I'm overlooking it, I haven't seen any antennas at the truck stops so I guess I'll have to order one.

Some of the xm receiver packages come with a “puck style” antenna and about 15 feet of coax lead.

For around 30 dollars on Amazon you can get a kit where you just pull sxm out of one vehicle and put in another.
Come with, mount, puck antenna, auxiliary connect cord, and power cord.
I pull my box from semi, then snap in truck when I am off.
Portable system from sxm as all this with service, then hardware kit from Amazon for the otherguys vehicle. My Dog Thanks this. -

If you work in the southwestern USA you can sometimes get away with positioning the puck on the dash somewhere but the further north and east you operate, the less effective this will be. At the very least it needs to be kept mostly level (horizontal) and be able to see as much sky as possible.
In my experience, the low profile pucks worked as good as the much more expensive styles that require a bracket or arm to mount. -
Xez1v1 onyx ez model for complete kit.
Don't get the one that goes in cig dc plug, tends to bounce out a lot.
It only has a wire for antenna, blue tooth to radio and loses signal a lot. -
Oh, one more thing. Make sure your truck radio has the audio connect port or you will need to get cig dc outlet style.
