They had a mix of both when I was there. The old generation Peoplenet isn't considered an ELD by the DOT. It is considered an AOBR (or is it an EOBR) and doesn't meet the requirements of the ELD mandate. I only know this because we are getting all new Peoplenet units as well.

That's the same issue we have with a lot (if not all) of our Qualcom units as well. They are barely legal under the ELD mandate. In fact they are technically not legal, but they ARE grandfathered in. Some of our drivers have gotten tickets due to DOT agents not understanding or not believing that our Qualcomms are still legal.

So we carry these in our permit books.

We’ve got an authorization letter that we carry in our permit books pertaining to the peoplenet.

Has to do with some kind of technicality regarding the fact that the Qualcomm has a cord that enables the operator to hand to a LEO outside the vehicle whereas the peoplenet is a fixed unit that can’t be removed.

    I wonder why...

How did this driver even try to make that curve? Stop the truck. Turn on flashers. Set out triangles. Call cops to help you back out.

Pay the ticket if you get one, and consider the lesson a cheap one.
