Clearances do not get "obtained" by appling or filing for them - they come with the "load"

    i.e. - you have hazmat

    you broker a military load

you apply to get USMLSC clearance - and after a few loads you will get a prferential carrier number (kinda like an internal ID number)...

but there is NO endorsement on your license - or "card" you carry that indicates your clearance level

and NO - prior military service means nothing in these matters.

that went into effect about a year ago...

you can either use a passport BOOK - or a North A. passport CARD - the card is only valid in canada / us / mexico and caribean...

they tell me i'l need a passport to cross the border "next time" every time i cross into canada, i go a couple times a month no passport but they always let me across( i always just show my dl and birth certificate). it also seems to be a little easier to get across and back in the the us depending on where you cross. Going in in detroit/windsor is easy coming out in detroit is a pain. crossing into canada at buffalo ny is a little more strict, coming to the us at buffalo is easy. coming out of canada at champlain,ny is my favorite, goin into canada at champlain wasn't too bad but been searched there a couple times. goin into canada in vermont not too bad never came out of canada into vermont. there is a crossing into canada in maine i forget the highway but its a very small crossing i got searched there goin in big time got a little nervous here. never crossed back to the us at this crossing

After June 1st you will need the passport or a FAST card if you want to get back into the U.S. They've extended the date a couple of times but June 1 2009 is definite.

Not sure but I think you'd get into Canada no problem, you just wouldn't get back into the states. Don't even think about leaving the U.S. if you don't have a passport and won't be back before June 1.

How hard can it be? Millions have crossed the border without documents.

I doubt that . A photo ID and birth certificate are required . Although they don't always ask for them you'd better have them . There's a pretty interesting TV show on every week about people being checked at border crossings . I can't remember the name of it but it's on the same time as American Idol . Anyway the show shows how hard it can be .

There are between 11 and 20 million illegals in the US right now. The fast majority didn't show any documentation to enter the US.
