Is my CDL banned for life? 1st DUI 32 years ago, 2nd 13 years ago

It doesn't. And the reverse is also true. Not all problem drinkers have DUIs.

 

Just stating a FACT. My dear aunt was killed by a drunk driver. No excuses. Just a dumba## drunken idiot.

 

It is not my intent to write a "book" here however I suspect my comment will be a bit long.

I am not "fussing" at the OP. I wish this person all the best I can think of. However it is important to remember people define alcoholism differently. To some an alcoholic is someone that abuses alcohol period. To others an alcoholic is someone that has a physical addiction to alcohol.

I seen the word sanctimonious used in this thread. OK I will bite. My mother was the baby of 10 children. She had 6 brothers. Her oldest sister was born in 1912 and she had 10 children 8 of which were boys. Everyone of those boys are older then I am, MUCH older in fact. EVERYONE of those boys, my uncles as well as cousins ALL developed problems with alcohol. One of my mother's older sisters has two girls. Those girls as well as my oldest sister remembers with vivid detail the night all three of them along with my mother carrying me in her arms was fleeing out a window while her brother and my dad are doing the best they could to kill one another. My uncle was according to my mother totally wasted on liquor. Thankfully my father was able to get him under control. During my Air Force years back in the 70s I was advised in the strongest way possible to stop drinking. While i never thought of myself as someone physically dependent on alcohol I do have a history of abusing it. Alcohol is one of the most dangerous drugs known to mankind. Just about every culture on planet Earth has problems with it's abuse. It leaves broken homes, broken bodies as well as total death and destruction in it's wake. I have observed this FIRST HAND. So when I see someone that shows signs of abusing alcohol I will in the most calm way I know ask them to seek help. You want to call that being sanctimonious? Go right ahead, I'm guilty as charged.

Alcoholism has NO CURE. Just because you get on that wagon and stay sober for 35 years does not mean you have found a cure. If after 35 years you drink again your again feeding your addiction and you MUST STOP doing this. THIS is why when I hear someone talk about a DUI/DWI even 35 years ago I still act this way. You DO have a history of alcohol abuse. Regardless of if you like it or not. Abusing alcohol has always been a sign of a possible problem with alcoholism and it always will be. NOT a diagnosis of alcoholism, just a sign that further followups are needed. With these words I'm out of this thread and this subject. I wish the OP well as I also do each and every person that has contributed to this discussion.

The short answer is YES! Just be aware while you may be able to get a CDL this does NOT MEAN an insurance carrier will insure you. Generally speaking, having never held a CDL IF you can get a regular DL you can get a CDL.

 

Many drivers, some on this forum, have had 2 or 3 DUI's in their lifetime.

 

Many Jobs advertise tickets and what you can have. DUI is one description.

Not saying this to brag, just to clarify.
I was an ALCOHOLIC b4 I ever began. ADDICTIVE Personality.

ALL CONVICTIONS involved JUST MYSELF.
NEVER ANOTHER INJURED PERSON.

I started running with Al C. O'hol when I was 14.
Kicked into high gear when 18.
1st D.U.I. at 20. Fine, brief Jail. Father Bailed me out. Said NEVER AGAIN.
I said "No Problem, ain't going back to jail unless I'm Framed". Framed Myself.
2nd at 22 or so. Larger Fine, a bit more Jail.
3rd at 23 within a week of the previous. Fines had Limits, Jail Times Did Not. 3 Months
4th at 25 or 26. 6 Months Jail.
First 3 in L.A. County.
4th in Riverside County at an Honor Farm in Hemet (fence surrounding the facility was 3 feet high, hence Honor). Escapees caught did 1 year downtown Riverside City Jail and had a Rabbit Stamp on their File. Released after 4 months.

Met up with 2 clowns, after sentencing for the 3rd Conviction, in L.A. County JAIL, both clowns had, then, been in a contest about number of D.U.I. convictions since the late '50's. One had 34 convictions, his "friend" had 35.

Moved to NC in late '85.
In '87, 5th. 1st and Last in Florence, South Carolina. 5 weeks in Florence City Jail.
In '91, 6th in LIFE, 1st and LAST in Forsyth County, NC. No jail.
NC and SC didn't "talk" to each other.

Alcoholic Treatment Center in Guilford County June 1992.

Sobriety Date June, 1992.

MY only "problem" in Truck Driving was the NC Conviction.
Some LARGE COMPANIES had a ZERO TOLERANCE for D.U/W. I. Convictions, some did not.
JB Hunt and Swift would not stop calling so I told them I had 4 DUI Convictions out of state.
Calls Stopped.

There has not arisen ANY Problem That Needed Alcohol!
