When the economy contracts (aka recession ) you will most likely see to many trucks chasing to little freight and rates will go down. It’s called the “business cycle”, which is a characteristic of a capitalistic free market economy.

Yes I have to scream this from my roof !!

WE HAVE BEEN THERE FOR A LONG TIME.

CAPACITY IS STILL TOO HIGH, RATES ARE STILL TOO LOW.

TOO MANY DRIVERS OUT THERE WILLING TO WORK FOR NOTHING

TOO MANY PEOPLE WANTING TO CASH IN ON EASY MONEY AND WILL END UP KEEPING RATES DOWN.

Heard that screamed in the mid 70' s and for years. The more things change the more some things stay the same.

I don't think it will get any better. For a typical men with mediocre education and no professional skills there are not too many options to make the measly 60K a year. The CDL schools are thriving. Newcomers with dreams cash their 401ks, IRAs, equities to buy trucks. Stories heard on streets and even some threads read here mostly instill euphoria and there is only a few short ones depicting how miserable it can get. All of sudden when the rates for dry vans went over 2.5 a mile, everybody is in euphoria and used out of commission junks are 80K and new trucks sales orders are 6 months backlogged.

They didn’t deregulate because they wanted rates to go up you know. Rates are still too high as shown by the need to bring in foreign truck drivers to subsidize the cost of JIT manufacturing and moving cheap foreign frieght from the ocean ports.

JIT has buffers now, no one sees a line go down because the supplier didn't get their product to them on time.

See that all the time in factories around here. Also see a lot of overtime because of JIT. JIT's made factory work a more miserable and stressful job. But hey, time and a half, I guess...

2009 it happened. A bunch of bigger companies went belly up. A bunch more cut the fat, and put on a hiring freeze.

“How does a company ‘trim the fat’, Six?”

My company took the safety scores and on time delivery records, compiled s list that consisted of the bottom third of the fleet, sent a list to the travel agent and asked the travel agent, “Who do you want to keep?”

Being accident free does not mean you’re a good driver. They cut the slackers too

To be exact on the backlog on sales... if you were to submit an order today it would take 9 months for it to be built, and maybe an additional month for it to be delivered.
