Hello, I've been looking into the hot shot loads. I've been a truck driver for the last 10 years, so I have a cdl A, medical card, Twic card etc. I have an insurance agent getting quotes together. I'm looking for any advise I can get. I wanna do this legally! I have a new chevy 3/4 ton diesel pickup, I've been looking at a pj 40' flat deck, is that a good trailer or should I go longer or shorter? If I go above the 26k lb rule will I be subject to mandatory elogs (if it does go through)? Just starting out is it better/smarter to lease on and run their numbers and let them deal with paperwork or is it better to get my own authority and do everything myself? Is there a trustworthy freight bill financing company? Just starting I don't have the capitol to run 2-3 months and have all bills paid, fuel, food, motels etc.... and what about rates, I know in a semi if you can't run for $1.70+ you're not gonna profit and barely cover the bills, what's a good running mile average should I be looking at?
like I said any information will be greatly appreciated!!!!

    1. Figure up your true operating cost. Most guys run 8,000 to 10,000 miles per month but you figure yours on how ever many miles you plan on running your truck per month. Your operating cost is everything you pay out to be in business. For instance fuel, tires, registration, permits, maintenance, insurance, truck payment, trailer payment, etc break it down by the mile.

    2. Figure up how much per mile you need for a decent driver pay check.

    3. Figure out what you need per mile for a company profit. Every company needs to be profitable.

These three things will give you the very “minimum” rate per mile average that you should run the truck for., I’m not saying run for the minimum. Knowing the total of these three figures will allow you to know what rate will work for you when you hear it.

There a lot more that goes into rates that you need to know but I don’t have the time to go into detail with you about it right now.

Wow! Thank you so very much for your time in this matter! I just want to see my friend succed with her business and I know I cant use EXACT numbers I'm just trying to be able to have some sort of set rate when inquiring loads. If we at any point show we don't have a clue about the business then, well...there are many things that could result in that. I just want to be able to figure a rate and still be able to profit. We have everything in place already and have even done some loads. However I honestly feel like I could grow more not using load boards. In all reality with us having our semi with trailor and a GMC with second trailor (both flatbed) all we have is fuel costs, insurance, maintenance, two drivers, and the simplen necessities.
So I guess what im trying to figure out is..is there certian types of freight to charge by the mile or certian distance. I've also thought about if the value of the freight should matter? I really appreciate everyone's advice and input
