I'm a brand new O/o, looking to purchase another truck to fill with a new driver. Assuming I can only find a driver fresh out of cdl school, do I have to have him trained? Or is that just a formality the major carriers go through. Thanks

No he won't need any training at all. It will just come to him naturally! NOT!! How long do you intend to stay in business?

Just think how it will go in court when you tell everyone your new driver had no training and you think your company is not responsible for anything. You probably won't even find insurance to cover a new driver. Then add no training, good luck on that.

I doubt an insurance company would insure an untrained driver. If they did, I wouldnt want to have to pay the premium.

If you believe that 30 hrs of seat time in an empty truck and some book time are good enough to drive your truck safely,.. then sure. Go for it. Whats the worst that could happen?

I mean,.. think about your question for a moment. A doctor straight out of school,.. would you want him to operate on you with out any sort of formal expertise or experience? Your question absolutely boggles my mind.

I'm going to make an assumption and guess that you yourself have no CDL,.. or if so,.. less than 2 yrs of actual experience. You've been reading and hearing about all the money in trucking for 2018 and decided you want to cash in on our success and figure its so easy,.. a monkey could do it. How am I doing so far?

I hope you did not refinance your home or cashed out your retirement.

In case you haven't figured it out from the replies above, the answer to your question is YES. Training is needed.

Is there like a set training program? How can i get to the point where my driver is trained enough that he'd be able to get insured? Like what are the benchmarks of training? Thanks

If this is an honest question, sounds like a troll to me, and I’ll keep the monkey training comments to myself. CALL YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY! They have guidelines for hiring and insuring you and your driver(s). They will have the ultimate and final say regarding new hires.

Why not just hire a professional driver? Someone with experience?

Someone with a clean MVA and CSA record. That would be the smart business choice.

Many ways to skin a cat,.. but its usually easier if he cant bite, claw and scratch you while doing it.

Unless you are willing to sit beside him for 6 - 8 weeks and teach him what he needs to know,.. a brand new driver with no experience in trucking will cause you more problems than 3 baby mommas and 2 side chicks combined with broke down cars and rent due.
