For those of you who are running with an aux tank in the bed which do you prefer... steel or aluminum? I have heard of a guy having problems with the aluminum leaking & having to have it welded several times. Maybe was just a cheap set up, but what do you say.

Since 99% of all fuel tanks on semi's are aluminum, there is nothing wrong with the material.

My guess is your friend got a Harbor Freight special...

If he has a problem with an aluminum tank, he must be beating the thing up with a hammer or drilling holes in it.

OUT of all my trucks in all the time I have own trucks, the worst ones were steel tanks. I never had an issue with an aluminum tank - ever.

Yeah I am not sure what the deal is. I was talking to my brother in law, who hot shots, to get a few tips from him & I asked about his tank. He said he went with steel cause a guy that runs for the same company as him has had his tank repaired 3 or 4 times. I literally see hundreds of those in the back of pickups, so as mentioned above I bet he purchased a cheap one & the welds are coming apart from the constant road jarring/bumps. My brother in law said he had to have his repaired once but that was his fault. He threw a 4X4 block in the bed really hard & it punctured a pin hole in the tank.

    I would recommend
RDS Fuel Tank Toolbox Combo - 90-Gal Cap, #72745

Is this the tank you run? If so how long have you been running it?

Yes, over 2 years now no problem other than I lost a cap put it on a pump and forgot it ;-) I just called RDS gave them the tank model number and order a new cap. I would recommend installing a straight-thru filter on the vent port to prevent spill when the tank is too full. The saving from having this tank has paid for itself many times over not counting the time lost and anxiety looking for the nearest gas station, you can easily save 20 cents per gallon at 100 gallons that's $20. In my area the difference between highest and lowest diesel price can be as much as 60 cents.

Thanks... great info!!! And yes I can understand how it could pay for itself in no time. It amazes me how much fuel prices can change just over a few miles. It amazes me more when I see people pumping at the one that has 50 cents/gal.higher. Again thanks for the info.

I have had steel and aluminum tanks. They all eventually get leaks. The only one that I had that never leaked was a semi truck aluminum tank which had a threaded fitting welded so that I could screw on a pump.JB Weld fixes the leak easily and I never had one leak from the repair again.
