I have 24.5 lp on Truck and 22 on tlr. . So I keep a decent 24.5 steer and a 22 for trailer. I need to put steer on a rim as no Truckstop will put used steer on . Need to change myself If blowout on steer happens.Loves is ok in a pinch . I bought 2 of they’re Aleos? Brand Tires a few yrs back. Surprisingly they wore even and lasted longer than any trailer tire I’ve had. They recently had all Firestone tires on close out sale 22.5 lo pro only.I see T/A pushing Double Coin the King of all Chinese Tires. Been reading very bad reviews on them Lately.Best tires I ever had was a set of Continental Drive( Premium Bridgestone)

Put a new one next to the 50 % tire and watch the older tire get flat spots. Might as well buy 2 new and keep a spare. Ah hell just drop $5000 at T/A on 8 Bridgestone drives!!! I’m sure they’ll give you $50 ea for your old tires!! What a deal.

For as often (or rare) as I've had tire problems, it wouldn't be worth the hassle or expense to carry around an extra tire or two only to have it dry rot before I ever need to use it. Besides that, if you're carrying the spare, are you also carrying the tools to change it yourself? Or are you still going to be sitting on the side of the road for 3 or 4 hours waiting for a tire guy (who's PO'd because it's just a service call, NOT a tire sale) come change it for you?

Run duals and you can limp it somewhere if you need to. If you're running stupid singles for weight reduction, carrying the weight of a spare defeats that purpose.

I wouldn't waste my money on a tire rack OR a spare tire.

I have tire carrier under trailer. Freshly capped virgin trailer tire if that makes sense. Gotta chain and pad lock it though. The skirts help hide but still.

It a trailer tire blows there you go. If the tractor blows then out this trailer tire on the tractor until you get home and then fix it.

I never buy new or used tires from a road service. If I have too I’ll buy a cap but consider it worthless because there is no history on it. So instead of selling it after you get home, it’s nice to have one under the trailer.

That is true. Big companies have dropped trailers all over the US, Canada, and even Mexico. Someone will probably steal their tires, and I hear they still do even without spares. They swap the good tires with some used ones.

I am aware of that problem. Tire mechanics recommend no more than 4/32 or 5/32 difference between dual singles. It turns out new trailer tires (like Continental) are about 14/32 and can usually be installed next to used tires that are, say, 10/32. I learned that trick from a big company a used to work for.

    It's a good argument for 22. BUT.

If you're running 24. It's a very good idea to have a spare as those are hard to find when you're in the sticks.

I have 24. Except the drives and drive drop. Those are 22. I have no idea why. And it's a stupid setup. Different size tires effect the performance of brakes. The 24 drums don't spin as fast as the 22 drums. Brakes work better when all tires are spinning the same.

Exactly. The 24.5 trailer tires we have tend to have little to no selection at the truck stop used tire market. Before we carried spares we would have to choose between the worst or the worse’er used tire for $300 bucks plus

I learned it the hard way! Another thing I’ve learned out of basic nessessity is while an old steer w/ wear on outer edge is only as good as the worn edge when installed on trailer. However I’ve ran old steers w/ 120k on front drive another 100k+ (2 steers together) and the worn edge doesn’t worsen. That amazed me.
