    No , it's a commercial vehicle.

Ok. I thought maybe without the trailer it would be ok. I should just look it up in the handbook.

Depends on where you are and if this vehicle is a farm vehicle or not. Your question as asked can not be answered. Assuming you are NOT talking about a farm vehicle used intrastate NO it can not be driven with a class "C" license because by definition most class 8 CMVs require a CDL (over 26,001 rated weight).

I say no. The gross weight is well above 26001, thus Class B and A territory (With any trailer making a combination)

There was a time long ago Bobtails were treated almost as ordinary cars, but I believe that's been cut out of current rules.

Not sure if this varies from state to state, but the way I understand it, a non-commercial license is a Class D, though most do not display it as such. So, if you hold a Class C, that *IS* in fact, a CDL, of which there are three classes...

    A) Combination vehicle 26,0001+ and/or towing 10,001+
    B) Single vehicle 26,001+ and/or towing under 10,001
    C) Single vehicle under 26,001 seating 16+ passengers, and/or HAZMAT requiring placards

But in answer to your question, a Class C CDL holder cannot legally operate a Class 8 tractor, as it is a CMV capable of grossing over 26,000 lbs. Class A only. I guess technically a Class B holder could drive it bobtail, but I wouldn't risk it, as these are capable of grossing anywhere from 33,000 - 80,000 or more. And believe me, you don't want the kind of trouble that comes with operating a CMV out of your class certification. ESPECIALLY if your Class C has no air brake endorsement. Farm vehicles are exempt, of course, but I believe there are restrictions to the radius in which they can operate, as this also exempts them from IFTA, if I'm not mistaken.

What is wrong with you, you got your answer.

The truck is a commercial vehicle, with a GVW over 26,001 lbs which means you could drive it with a class B but not a class C license.

The only way you can drive it with a class C is to have it titled as a private vehicle and if you do, you may be paying full sales tax on it.

What if it's classified as an RV?

I think you can drive it. However I have not looked into it. I just know that "commercial" use is used in a lot of the definitions.

I've seen elderly couples driving Class 8 trucks as RV's. If I remember correctly, the 5th wheel had been removed. Some have another type hitch for an RV trailer.
