First I want to say thanks to any and all that reply to this and give me any tips and advice I really appreciate it.

Okay so here's my dilemma I'm trying to get my Class A CDL in Oklahoma so I can become an owner operator I've had two people in my family already do it and now they're working the oil patch and the money they're making is just beyond insane they're making more than doctors and dentists etcetera.. I quit my normal job and went and worked for my dad he trained me and I worked for him for about the last four and a half months because I guess what happened was is is a lot of the Oklahoma DPS examiner's quit their job I guess because the lack of pay raise amid other things. So I drove with my dad after giving getting my permit for about a month and went to schedule my test so I could go ahead and see if I would pass or not because my father thought I was ready to at least get the full CDL and then work for him for a little bit longer cuz he didn't want to release me until I was ready. Well I soon found out that it wasn't going to be as easy as I thought.. it took nearly two months just for me to get in to take my first test and as some of you may know the state of Oklahoma doesn't do anything right which I think most people gripe about their own States government and how unorganized they are. So it takes me two months to get in and the first time they failed me on the pre-trip because I didn't say that the windshield wipers weren't corroded (I said they were working and the spray was working but I didn't say they weren't corroded) and then they also failed me on the fact that I didn't say the coolant reservoir wasn't leaking fluid (I said it wasn't leaking just not that it's not leaking fluid) and I guess on the heater and defroster I tested them but she said that I didn't let them get to where they were blowing hot air so I didn't wait long enough.. So after failing I went back out with my father for another 2 months driving working on the truck and getting to know everything that's involved with being an owner operator and I went and took my second test 2 days ago I passed the pre-trip inspection with flying colors I passed the in cab and I passed the air brake test all perfect, but I failed my backing test.. I don't know if some of you people know that in Oklahoma there's only two places you can rent a truck and both places the trucks are very small as well as the flat beds are very small so they get away from you very rapidly.. It's almost like trying to back a jet ski into the lake so it's not like my dad's full size pneumatic trailer so I'm not really used to that... So after failing that I called yesterday to reschedule and now they're telling me they can't tell me what day the new schedules are going to come out and that both places Oklahoma City and Tulsa are booked up until the beginning of November I just don't see how this is possible I would think that the trucking companies in the oil and gas industry would be freaking out because there's such a lack of CDL drivers in this state and the State is making it so hard for us to get our CDLs it's become almost a nightmare.. It's one of the hardest and most stressful things I've ever done in my life nothing in college was this stressful... So now I have to go back to a normal job and then try to squeeze in training and backing up practice and stuff like that while supporting my family working this normal job and trying to juggle everything else.. Also my pwrmit expires in November so I have to redo everything.. It's just very annoying because I could get into a semi truck right now whether it be a 10 speed 13 speed 18 speed and I believe I could safely navigate from here to North Dakota and back, but they failed me because I used one too many pull ups on my backing test which I don't understand because most companies are going to put you with someone for 6 weeks if you're a green CDL driver and i see tons of veteran drivers having to make several pull ups at sites all the time... My whole point of this was I just wanted to know if there was any tips anyone could give me it's just very stressful as a young guy trying to make it and it seems like the hardest part of this whole thing is just the state of Oklahoma and how unorganized and under managed the DPS seems to be.. I had heard that if you went to a truck driving school that they had their own appointment system through the state and I called one and I'm prepared to just go ahead and finance it just so I can get my CDL faster but they're telling me that they go off the same appointment list as well now I don't know if that's true because a lot of people I knew always thought that the DPS examiners were easier on the truck driving school students and that they got them in faster for appointments due to the fact that the truck driving school we're paying more taxes to the state of Oklahoma and they felt they were trained better.. It just seems like the state of Oklahoma as well as the federal government are both making it very hard on people who were trained by like a relative and or who are self-taught Etc. I don't know if it's like that in other states and sometimes I read on these forums it seems like in other states people get right in and they can retest within a week but for those of us here in Oklahoma that's like the hardest part is the fact that we're having to wait a month or two just to get back in.. If I could re-test 2 days after I fail I wouldn't be stressed at all even if it took me 5 times etc.. At this point I'm going to start practicing backing up with a pickup and a small car hauler flatbed since that's closer to the trailer we have to rent for our test..

Sorry I wrote this with Bluetooth and it probably reads weird.. Any tips or encouragement is appreciated!

Don't stress. Stop it. If you are stressing now, I hate to see you on Donner at 2 AM on glaze ice.... in a raging winter storm dumping 10 feet where you are by sunrise.

Here is my condensed post answer to your general first post. This thread is endless, anything that comes up, talk to us and someone will get to you soon enough.

Becoming a O/O with a fresh CDL is very risky. You have so much you need to learn about trucking. It's STRONGLY recommended you run as a Company Driver for years. You say you have family in oil patch trucking, run under one of them as a COMPANY DRIVER with no contact with finances, insurance, permits, authroity etc. Run as a employee for a while.

I started off in my Pa's Tavern as a dish washer then seafood killer and steamer and on up at one time long ago. What I learned there stayed with me most all my life.

Who cares what the DPS trainers quitting. That's on them. It's not your problem.

Oklahoma's State of Government is not your problem while you are being tested. Discard all that. If the Tester wants to hear you Parrot the Oklahoma Semi Manual and SAY NO CORROSION ON WIPERS... yes Mr Parrot, you speak those words to the blessed Tester.

Get the Oklahoma Semi Truck Testing Manaul. That will be the holy writ word for word until you learn it all. This is to get you through the State Test.

Your Real learning begins with the first job and load.

As far as the coolant test, you have to say it's not losing coolant or fluid. Speak it. And also the heater core etc that pertains to engine temperature. If you are not already at 180 or so in that tractor's dashboard temp gauge it will be there shortly, relax while you wait for the temp to come up and make heat that your tester wants.

What's the hurry, you only want to test once and pass.

In Backing you need to attend a trucking school. They will LEARN YA. By the time you finish trucking school you will be close to your scheduled Testing time with Oklahoma.

The problems of Industry getting drivers is age old. It has been that way before you and I were alive and before we were America. (Getting good workers) It's not our problem.

Examiners are not "Easier" they have one test criteria to follow as laid down by Uncle Sam on the Federal Requirements for Trucking.

    Nothing is faster.

Uncle Sam Regulates this industry and all involved in it. No ifs buts or maybes. 9-11 hurt us all really bad in some ways.

Don't bother backing up pickups and boat trailers. The problem is vehicle of trailer shorter than it will bend very fast and you will not develop the necessary EYEBALL skills to aim a 53 foot trailer behind a 20 foot tractor into a hole approx 15 feet wide in the test.

I discarded large portions of your text to preserve this forums 10,000 word limit. We can always go back over this and that all day long.

I'll just re wrote this reply.. Yeah it will take me 2 to 3 months to get my own truck after passing anyways. I'll probably go haul water after I pass. Yeah my brother in law is 25 and he is a fresh O.O. In 6 months he bought a house, saved up enough for an INFRAME and more, bought a newer suv, got his own LLC and authority etc.. So it's hard not for me to do the same. I pulled loads for 5 months now and have pretty good experience for most people taking their CDL test.. Yeah I gotta just get to where backing up a trailer is second nature so I don't get nervous.. The waiting list for examination is the hardest and most stressful part... I know it's gonna pay off and I gotta be patient. It's just hard since when my dad and brother in law done this last year they didn't have to wait to retest...

Oil will not bust. For a while yet.

There are approx 9 to 12 fields in the USA and it's coastal regions plus oceans. There is a form of very deep drilling that is only now being brought online but that takes time.

I expect the USA to become a Creditor Nation first in deep oil then in Natural Gas within about 100 years or so. Maybe a little more. Our little bitty rigs are only poking the top of the kitchen dinner on the earth's crust. Eventually they will find the good stuff that I think we have.

We will be long dead when oil runs out along with most of the gas. The planet will probably be trying to colonize or mine resources from space by then. I don't know. I don't think space stuff or save the earth problems Im just a trucker.

Learning backing is not too hard. You turn wheel this way, trailer goes that way, EVERY TIME. It's a matter of WHEN and HOW MUCH. OR... HOW LITTLE. If you don't do a good job and get out and look alot, you will break something. And that's that for you.

The STRESS is part of learning new things in life. If my ex handed me a knitting kit and told me to knit her a flower tonight, Im stressesd. I would ask her what the hell for? To start and where it goes from there who knows? I don't knit. But if I had to learn to keep HER HAPPY... guess what... Ima knitting. If SHE aint happy, no one is. I would hate for that to develop in that way. HA....

Learning new things is stressful. A Dummy can do anything in life. If they just learn enough.

I'll take a cheap shot at Oklahoma. The Government has been crossing swords with Uncle Sam a long time. I don't know all the details but at some point I would not be surprised of OK decided ok, we are now a Sovereign nation of OK in the world's assembly of Nations. Uncle sam will not like that too much.

You are learning. Step by step. Back in the 80's all I had were stories. I knew nothing when I started. Fortunately a number of what i call trucker daddies beat me lessons until I learned. Im one of those who need that ow to learn. Fortunately I don't abuse trainees... Much. But I will do a few cherished playtime jokes on them NOW and THEN...

Even today I have to learn something. If you stop learning, what is the point of living.

    Good luck.

You don't have to rent a truck if you know people that own one so use your dads truck and trailer. Your already familiar with it that will help a lot.

If your permit expires all you have to do is retake the written tests, it costs nothing (at least didn't) and won't hurt you at all going forward to go over it all again it is a lot of information.

You could also call one of the many schools. They might have an abbreviated course (refresher type). Tell them your situation they may be able to help since getting people a CDL is what they do.

There is no shortage of CDL drivers in Oklahoma or in the country period. Just a shortage of people that want to work in the oilfield, it wasn't long ago that thousands were being fired daily.
    Once bitten twice shy.
