I live 3-4 block a way from Van Nuys Airport. I have seen many cool looking original vintage planes parked there.

Actually the Germans had a “scorched earth” policy in the final days of the war.Leave nothing for the enemy, if they couldn’t have it, then nobody could! Some machines were captured intact by the Allied forces and tested. After testing the aircraft were either donate to museums or unceremoniously scrapped. A lot of modern aircraft today owe their existence to some of the pioneering designs the Germans created.

My grandpa was among Red Army soldiers who attacked Berlin in April 1945. He was saying that during april month they destroyed all research laboratories and samples of modern, new developed arms. Also he was telling that SMERSH was looking for some advanced weaponry and for some German engineers.

Yup. The Soviets were very eager to get their hands on any advanced German technology (and the scientists developing it) as the USSR wanted to one up the West in jet and rocket propulsion, both for civil and military purposes. The NKVD (and SMERSH) were very busy in the late 1940s into the 1960s.

Well we brought a bunch of Nazi German rocket scientists over here to the US and assimilated them into our NASA space program after WWII. Just go to Huntsville Al. Von Braun ( former Nazi.rocket scientist) was one of them. They were instrumental.in getting our first satellite into orbit and worked on the Apollo space missions. The Von Braun Research Hall is there. Not all of their knowledge was lost, we turned it around and used it to our benefit.

Hugo Schmeisser was taken to SU with other 16 German arm makers... he worked for SU until 1952.
