Speaking of little steel balls, I remember hauling about 40 drums of steel shot from Bedford, VA to the MidWest somewhere. Near the junction of US-40 and I-70 leaving Kentucky for Indiana, came around that curve to see traffic stopped dead just past the US-40 exit. I almost had to take the shoulder to avoid another rig, and I decided to take the exit and cool out at the Petro rather than wait for someone else to come along and hit me.

Loved the Pete 386 I drove then, but that puny little MX-10 scared the bejesus out of me that day. 85-90 application pressure, engine brake wide open, downshifting at 1350 or so, it still BARELY had enough engine braking to bring 79,750 gross to a stop in time. Brakes smelled like a skunk had sprayed the truck. I ever go back on the road, I think I'll buy a glider with a 60-series and a 10/13-speed with say, 3.23-3.42 gears. Shift swiftly and carry a BIG engine.
