I don't know how you guys do it. I went ahead and gave it a try and threw in the towel after a month. I am on a walmart account through a 3rd party and they have you work 6 days a week and you work into your day off. The hours are all over the place. You can have your pta set for 20:00 and they give you a load for 03:00. If Friday is when you take your 34, you might not get done with your route until 13:00 on Friday. So since Friday is your supposed day off, your day off is #### near over since you'll spend the rest of the day sleep only for you to get back out there after your 34 is up. The final straw for me is when the dispatcher called me to say that my route picks up at 04:30. I then said "but my pta is set for 20:00". He then said that's all they had and I have no choice but to run it. I then said "oh I certainly do have a choice, I quit!" and hung up!

They have you running double routes some days and good luck making it through a week without one of those poorly maintained reefers giving high temps or not starting up all when you go to pick it up and you have to sit at the DC for a couple of hours while they trans-load it and on top of all of that, you have to deal with rude ### receivers that always seem to have something smart to say and they never answer the door, so you have to walk all the way around and then have to play "find the manager" for 15 minutes.

And don't even get me started on the loaders at the DC putting together pallets like a kindergartner. Can't tell you how many times I have seen those losers pathetically wrap pallets or put boxes of juice on top of bags of cheese and the pallet is either leaning badly or completely tipped over. Some of those loaders are definitely high because when I got to a stop where I had a dry trailer and the receiver opened it up, the entire trailer smelled like weed and it caught all of the employees attention.

I don't know how you guys do it. Went right back OTR.

I did it for awhile due to a family situation & needing to be home more. You're right; I think grocery stores hire all the village idiots. I was stressed all the time dealing with those clowns.

Imagine doing that work where it’s snows 5 months out of the year.

You’re not telling me anything I didn’t already know just by understanding the logistics. Add in the fact drivers are constantly quitting making the rest have to deal with all the associated unplanned call to works.

I assume you’re probably talking about Walmart and that’s probably the worst because it’s ran with the “mega dry van fleet” mentality.

I did Walmart grocery with Swift for about one year... the hours sucked but it was about $1200 a week so I didn’t complain until it affected my health and living in cold Midwest didn’t help....

My stress came from the people I had to deal with at the grocery stores, plus I wanted OTR, not local/regional.
Grocery store employees always trying to steal off the truck or claim shortages when in reality they stole items and hid them in the store.
I started throwing away any paperwork that showed shortages or damages, so the store couldn't get credit for it. I made a game and war out of dealing with those village idiots.
It was a happy day when I finally went OTR again.

Dealing with grocery places is bad enough as an OTR driver. I would never even consider a dedicated account with any of them.
My sanity is too important to me, not to mention a somewhat regular sleep schedule.

And you wonder why I am super careful in a grocery store to this day. The stockers get peeved when I pull a case of something off their rack to see which farm shipped the apples for example. If I recognize the source as having hauled out of there in washington state for example I'll go over the apples. They learned to tolerate me by now.

It's best to start off in grocery when you have no experience at all and don't know any better. He he he.

I turned an early before dawn corner last week ( Green Bay maybe , not sure) and had to come to a stop behind all the trucks backed up trying to get into an Aldi D/C. I was grateful to be headed to my 15 minute drop n hook and back on the road for another 550. Love shopping at their store but have no use for their D/C nor any other grocery warehouse and it’s lumper nonsense.
