It's like everything else in the business...no hard fast rule of what "slow down" is. I know that you're making a point, and I am not disagreeing or making a counterpoint,...just posting for those new ones who may be lurking.

Disco show on the shoulder. The law says to Slow Down or Move Over. If you cant move over, slow down. How slow is slow? Depends on what's happening on the shoulder. If there's anyone on the left side of the vehicles, drop to the minimum speed limit. Hog the zipper while you're at it. If he's on the right side of the car, and there's a good shoulder, let him hear your air brakes. Most cops wont bother you if you let them hear your air brakes. If you're over 12 wide, switch lanes. Then again, if you're pulling 12 wide, it's probably not your first rodeo and you will be looking for these situations and see them before most.

I remember when they passed Scott's Law in Illinois. That can be quite a fine.

Many different jurisdictions, many different rules. Some require to slow even in all lanes, some specify how much to slow, some are less specific. Common sense is all that's really needed though.

If you cant figure it out than maybe you should hang up your cdl...
Idk maybe it be good idea to wait till your passed it all before tossing out your beer from the window...

Me id be more worried about idk braking the law and killing an officer of the law over what some dumb ### behind me will do if i slow down with disco balls going from every direction....

This is near and dear to my heart, I have lost three friends that were struck and killed simply doing their job and I have been hit twice myself. A sobering fact, on average one tow truck driver is struck and killed every 6 days in America. That is more than police, fire and highway maintenance workers combined.

How to react when approaching a vehicle on the shoulder depends upon the indvidual scene. Slow down move over laws simply do not work, it is not the alert and attentive drivers that are striking and killing roadside workers. No law is going to protect from impared drivers.

Personally, I don't care what the traffic behind you thinks, slow down and move over. Period. As professionals I should not have truck drivers blowing the hat off my head as they wiz by, you are suposed to be looking 10-15 seconds ahead and should recognize the impending hazards.

Not one of you can say different until you have been working on the shoulder of a highway and have heard a vehicle cross the rumble strips, have had it hit you or one of the vehicles you are working on. We, the responders that keep the highways clear and safe, should not have to put our lives on the line every day just so that the public is not inconvenienced by slowing down for a few seconds.

Bottom line, any of you that refuse to slow down and move over when it is perfectly clear don't deserve to drive a moped let alone a commercial vehicle.

If we didn’t have eld’s maybe they could make it 3 miles to the next truck stop. I’m so fed up with elogs i’m actually building a 99 379 with a c series cat so I can do paper logs and cheat a few minutes if I need to. I don’t overwork myself by any means but this system need a 30min grace period or something. Too many parked trucks since this law came into effect.

Honestly most of the trucks on the side of the road are Volvos. I saw 5 Volvos on the side of the road one day.
