Do I need a DOT number to move my tanker?

    Here is my situation. I haul crude oil and I need to purchase a tanker in order to get on with a new company. I do not have my own authority. The company will not hire me or let me run under their DOT # until I bring them my tanker to inspect.

    Can I move the crude oil tanker if it has no product inside?

    I would do some checking with state DOT first but id probably slap a "Not For Hire" sign on my doors and run. But ive never owned my own truck.

    Have it delivered at the carrier, that way you can have it inspected and sign the contract.

    As long as your not moving freight, you can obtain a temporary permit to move that truck or trailer. I would also advise, Hanging a clearly readable sign in the passenger side/front window "NOT FOR HIRE". I would also not have any other DOT numbers on the side of your truck. I have done this and even crossed several state lines. Here is the website for Texas and getting a temporary permit >> TXDMV.GOV - Temporary Permits

    He can get temporary insurance policy for this exact reason. My insurance company offered a 3 or 5 day temporary policy when I bought my new trailer. Call your insurance and ask them.

    Yes you can haul just purchased trailers across the country with nothing more then bill of sale.

    Don't know about the insurance but I hauled 1 used gasoline tanker from Maine to Utah. And 3 new flatbed trailers from Arkansas to Montana.

    All I had was the papers. No plates or labeling of any kind.

    The 3 flatbed were more or less the load. 2 on top of 1.

    Nobody stopped me for paper check either.

    However. I was working for both carriers. Might be different scenario if you don't have a carrier.
