    "Quote"

..."I hope we are not putting the public into danger just to make the freight on time." end quote. And this is a gist of one of the associations of Motor Carriers in the industry.

Seriously?! Are they THAT dense in those ivory towers? Maybe we STICK THEM into the cab, crack the whip and yell MUSH, yer late.

This industry needs to essentially do what they used to do not long ago. Here is a load driver. You have 10 days to California Monday next. AM no later than 10 AM. You WILL be empty by 2PM. (Trains take 10 days to cross USA with a boxcar of stuff...) and here part of your payroll, get rest when calling me empty.

This was before computers that matter. Sometimes Western Union Telegrams etc. Trucks did 300 miles a day on a good run. Everyone pretty much showed up in the morning to deliver into say Sysco, which then knows they need that stuff on the smaller trucks for everyone from Taverns, butchers, resturants and even US Military navy yard, bases etc. later that afternoon. Or into the night.

The whole appointment be there in 10 minutes business started in the mid 90's prior to that we got there when we got there provided it's a delivery DAY not ... 3:15 AM or some stupid time stamp that no one will honor. And the abuses continued to worsen in the shippers and recievers. Trucks become mobile holding storage etc.

In short we are there to DRIVE that #### thing there. Anything else is a parasite or liability against the drivers ability to DRIVE. Regulations or not. The problem is still the same.

I take a strong position that its nothing that has been solved actually. Except one. The motor carrier and broker. They constantly tell each other....

yup we can get it to Burbank CA with a US Mint delivery for Bob Barker in the morning at 8AM, he's leaving Philly right now.

BS. Who do they GET off making promises to each other that the DRIVERS must now mule up and keep? Ask the driver a moment what he or she thinks when that #### pile of freight will get to Burbank. Chances are he or she or a team would know really precisely when it will be there if it is TRULY important.

And you wonder why I have powerful thoughts the way I do sometimes.

The article seems to be pointing to the HOS and ELD as the problem but no where are we seeing more inexperienced drivers hitting the road and causing accidents.

Odd though that the picture they chose to use for the article was a truck stuck under a bridge, which is a rookie mistake.

Its not the speeding truckers fault. Nope its the hos that made that trucker speed.
    What a ####### article.

The key is always blame someone or something else for your failures. That way when enough people do it, you wont be the only idiot without a cause.

We hear a lot of drivers saying because of a lack of flexibility, we’re speeding,” said Jim Mullen, chief counsel for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration

Setting ourselves up for mandatory speed governers there.

They should extend the 10 hour break to a solid 14 hours off duty or sleeper.
They should reduce the 14 hour rule to 10 hours.
And they should limit drivers to no more than 450 miles in a 24 hour period.

    LOL

No where are the shippers and receivers and their 2 hours of free detention or whatever mentioned. My number one clock killer are those two. There just isn’t a penalty to them. Weird how they almost always seem to get me out exactly at 2 hours...before they have to pay.

Yes I’m new, but the only time I seem to driver faster than normal isn’t to get freight somewhere it’s to find a place to park. No freeway on ramps no sketchy “on the other side of a bridge”.

Sidebar - I wonder if 24 hour fitness allowed truck parking with a monthly gym membership if I would use it. I think I might. Park, use the bathroom, quick workout, sauna, hot tub, shower and then across the parking lot to eat somewhere. Sounds pretty good actually. Until the heathens show up piss in the lot, toss their bags of poo and #### stained shorts on the ground and basically make it all 3rd world.

That's actually not a bad thought. One could build a fitness center, with truck parking, charge a monthly fee, and have all the other amenities a truck stop would have. (Except fuel) And to keep the riffraff out, it would be required that anyone parked there must have actually used the gym for a minimum amount of time, which would be verified by a time stamped receipt of some sort.

I would think, if they were convenient to get to, you'd be surprised at how many people would actually make use of such a thing.

Only so much a driver can do to compensate for delays out of thier controll. Why are they thinking th y need to run like a "bat out of hell"? I don't think it's HOS, that is part of it I'm sure. But there is something else going on beforehand.... You all know what it is.

Blaming HOS isn't going to change the underlying problem.

Fact remains that HOS is supposed to be about safety. Apparently it’s not working as well as they hoped. How about doing away with HOS as a DOT compliance and make it a department of labor issue. Meaning you can’t push a driver past this point.
