Today I saw 3 A. Duie Pyle trucks pulling Reinhardt Food Service 48' trailers on the turnpike. These were not new trailers. Is Reinhardt so strapped for drivers that they can't even find shuttle drivers?
I find that hard to believe that Reinhardt can't find shuttle drivers and there so hard up that they had to hire another company to do there shuttle work, but who knows. Either that or A. Duie Pyle is going to have to do routes for Reinhardt oh boy.

i think it's time for a foodservice company to really shake things up as far as working conditions/procedures etc.
Who knows, you could be the catalyst: For instance, just today, for some reason, i was thinking about this idea:

Use slipsheets instead of pallets----this alone will make things easier as they are much lighter; Drivers have to constantly relocate their empty pallet pile throughout the day. Slipsheets can be shrinkwrapped just as pallets are.

But that's not even the real reason i propose using slipsheets. What i envision is "raised ribs" made from cardboard and glued onto the slipsheets (or even naturally molded into the slipsheets) along the slipsheets, say 12 or so inches apart going from end to end and lenght-wise, so there'd be maybe 5-6 total on each slipsheet. Then, we get a special hand truck with, instead of a a flat plate nose as most handtrucks have. We, instead have two forks---much like a mini-forklift. In this way, this allows us to slide the handtruck under existing stacks of boxes, rather than the conventional method of restacking boxes onto the handtruck. This alone saves a lot of work and time. Then when you are in the store and it comes time to unload the boxes, there is a special push pedal mechanism on some handtrucks that allows you to slide the boxes off easily. i will try to locate a link for this existing technology when there is time, but it is out there and it works.
The slipsheets can be used over and over and they are much, much lighter and less cumbersome than a whole stack of pallets.

Next, let's get some low deck trailers so it will be easier to go up and down the ramp, if we choose to use a ramp. And this would also probably eliminate the need for a liftgate which is a big time-waster. We would have to use ramps at the docks to raise the trailers for loading, but that's really not a big deal and much cheaper than making the docks lower.

So, just these three modifications would make things like 50% easier and faster.

Yes, if i had a foodservice company things would be different. The drivers would be some happy mofos.

Ha, there equipment here in Ohio looks like it's been run absolutely through the mill. One of our drivers interviewed at Reinhardt and he was like, yeah the yard is far from my house and there trucks and trailers were all filthy and shot looking. I know they are always hard up for drivers there constantly offering $5K sign on bonuses.

Reinhardt Mt. Pleasant is offering 10,000 sign on bonus and still can't find drivers and those Pyle trucks are deliveries. They have a helper unloading, yes, it's that bad in Mount pleasant.

How can they find a helper, but not an actual driver? Is Reinhardt going to go out of business on account of they can't find people to do there work? I don't know that much about them, but what is so bad about Reinhardt that people avoid them like the plauge. I'm Sysco here in Cleveland has an awful and I mean awful reputation and is the biggest revolving door ever, but I've never seen them have to hire another company to do there work.

I know for the first year the drivers make pretty good money 1300 a week guaranty I think but then it goes to performance pay I was talking to one driver out on a route that told me he was only gonna make like 100 bucks for a 10 hour day I told him I wouldn't have got out of bed to unload groceries all day for 100 bucks last time I seen that driver.

From what I hear, the guy in charge at the Mt.Pleasant warehouse is a major A Hole. They are having a hard time finding drivers and are in danger of losing some major accounts. They are offering their sales people money to find experienced route drivers. They hit up a few of the sales/sales guys out on the routes and got laughed at LOL.

There’s a thread here in another forum about maines doing something similar. Looking for O/O to pull a trailer around while someone else unloads it.

We’ve had marten pulling shuttles for us for years. Those smarter than me say it is saving money. I guess those guys get to be gone all week while making $50k
