I run a successful hotshot car hauling company with NO CDL since 2012. I go to every state in the lower 48. Don’t let people fool you. It’s easy. And can explain it all. I’m from Illinois. And our strandard license is a class D. To most states that’s a chauffeurs license. You need that. And you need weighted plates for the truck and trailer. My truck is weighted at 12k. And my trailer is at 14k. You can’t derate a truck. You can derate the trailer though very easily. I go to Long Island all the time. And Miami. And have 0 issues. And the pay is amazing. And no IFTA.

3 cars. 2 big trucks or box vans. Fed ex trucks. Campers. Boats. Everything really. My empty weight is 14k. The average car weighs between 3-4K. Give or take a little.

Ifta costs anywhere from 200-500 per year. Less if you are really good. One extra car per year would pay that. If the pay really is "amazing" you should have no problem swinging that. Stop telling people this business pays "amazing" when you aren't even taking full advantage of your own equipment.

I get the cheaper fuel. By far. I goto the gas station across from the truck stops that are 30-40 cents cheaper. I used to do bigger haulers. I drove a 9 car for years. I make a lot more now. So yea. The pay is great.

OK,,,, I have too ask, why would a guy that "used" to run a 9 car be running a 3 car with NO CDL, I don't care that you went from a 9 to a 3, no biggie, do what makes you happy, but why in the world would a guy that had a CDL ever give it up????? Hell if I quit tom and started washing dishes at the Cafe I would still keep my CDL.

    Hulld and Terry270 Thank this.

No points records. Illinois does it different. We don’t go by points. Makes it easier there. And if I do get a ticket. I can do supervisions and stuff. I don’t need the cdl any more. Cheaper. Easier.

Ok and I do the same thing on occasion with my Semi? And now you are saying that you once had or still have a CDL? But you choose to handicap your business and make less money? Nothing you have said makes any sense.

And to be clear I am not bashing anyone who wants to run smaller equipment, I've thought about it myself. But my idea of smaller is converting my volvo midroof to SA and running a single axle air ride trailer

Load times. Crappier rates for same pickups. I take loads to the middle of no where. Making over a dollar a mile a car. Getting way better mileage than a semi.

I'm not so sure about WAY better, we are around 8.5 fleet average, on a 4 car that can haul some pretty big loads,,,,,,and the truck will go well over a million miles, same old argument, but most guys I know with your setup are around 8 loaded and around 10 pulling empty trailer.
