And then you have guys like me who have the brains but won't get hired by anyone because I'm "too old".

Some people just don't want to do the office thing.

Your 25. Your 20's are for trying new things. Just ask all the people who come here an ask about drug testing. ;)

Try it out. Maybe it's something you'll like.Trucking/driving...not drugs. I figured I should clarify.

Define social life..Some folks idea of a social life is being able to get on facebook. Or play their online games, etc etc etc. Your not sounding like the club, rave, party type.

If your biggest concern is seeing your family and or friends, this is why you have ways to keep in touch while away. I'd be more concerned if you said you hated driving, traffic, etc.

Try it out if you don't like it you'll make some of the people here happy who want to see everyone fail that doesn't pop out the womb knowing how to work a 18 speed blind with their left foot and right hand tied behind their back happy. If you do like it...win!

I wouldn't want to sit in a cubicle all day an deal with advertisement type of people either.

Sirscrapntruckalot - I'm not prejudice. I hate everyone equally.

It really depends on you.Can you do it?Will you stay at it?A Lot of the general public think its easy, sress free and pays a lot of money. Most drivers dont make much for at least the 1st year and "was out". Not being unencouraging, just honest.I nearly "Quit",several times,but...here I am 13 years into it.JMO

In your shoes, I’d try a local (day cab) gig, and see if that suits you.

    I suspect it might.

I’d be happy to answer any questions you might have via PM or a phone call, as I ‘get’ the point you’re at in life pretty well, and can offer my experience/advice specific to how I ended up where I’m at, etc.

You say money is not a motivator, why not? Are you already independently wealthy?

OTR is a unique opportunity if it fits you. If you don't have a mortgage or other bills, you can live in the truck and stack cash. First year out, should be able to save 40k. Second year, at least another 40k. More if you run team.

Then if you like it, maybe buy a truck. Or put a large down payment on a home. If you are smart, and disciplined, you can set yourself up for an easy life.

Do you have any mechanical ability? Maybe consider going to a trade school. You can probably make better money and have a normal schedule working a trade such as plumbing or carpentry. I'd imagine that eventually you'd like to have a family of your own and I'm not sure if otr is the best job for that. Unless, you find a woman that doesnt care if youre gone for long stretches at a time. Trucking is definitely a lifestyle. But like somebody else mentioned, if you give it a shot for a couple months, what do ya got to lose? Except for the $5k you spent on your cdl training. Good luck to you in whatever you choose.

Give it a shot! Even if you try it for a year and decide you hate it, it will still be a good life experience and you will have lots of stories to tell your friends that will make their lives seem dull in comparison. When I was in my 20’s I had friends who were still living with their parents while I was out driving around the country and sleeping in a different state every night.

And there are a lot of different opportunities out there besides your typical otr. You would be surprised what kind of cool specialized stuff you can get into with a little bit of experience.
