I have the " idle free " unit on my truck and after having owned a couple diesel fired units I can say it's no better or worse than any other unit .
    Pluses :
It's very easy to maintain , just keep it clean and use terminal protector spray on all the connections .
Plan on new batteries every 2 years , it's been very reliable overall ....the heat side will cook you out and also heats the engine .
In heat mode the batteries are good for about 48 hours .
    Minuses :
Parts are pricey other than the batteries .
The hot water pump failed last winter and a new one was 1300.00 .
The AC side struggles to keep up in high temps until the sun goes down .
In AC mode the batteries are good for about 10 hours max .

These units can be installed with what's called a reefer link and it's basicly a power cord that connects the reefers charging system to the apu unit .
With this hooked up the batteries are continually charged by the reefer and never run down ....it also charges the truck batteries .
I would probably buy another if the price was right but it's not perfect either .
The really nice features I like is the reefer link and the hot water pump ....in cold weather even below zero the day before I leave I turn on the heat and get into a warm truck the next day with the engine coolant already at 120 degrees .
    Happy trails .

cke and Midwest Trucker Thank this.
