The truck will cost you more than 40. The insurance will cost more than 12. To retain a CDL driver for $500 week will be a challenge. Your trailer will not have to cost 15. Tires will not cost that much. I am thinking your insurance for new numbers and hiring drivers will cost more than 12. You would have to buy used truck for 40 and that can be risky unless maintenance can be verified. More miles per week would improve the numbers.

I was calculating on used truck for a starter. I can do most work but also have a diesel mechanic. Have the insurance quotes already. Tires I figured high for caution. I hate buying tires so I figured high by banking for replacing and blow outs etc.
I don't know about the driver. Would be interested in opinions. However will not be paying a driver all the time. -
Lite bug is right, your insurance sounds low for a new start up company. Does that quote include hauling both freight and vehicles? Does that agent have you restricted to a 500 mile radius ?
As far as your truck purchase. This is just me but I’d rather pay a little bit more and buy a brand new one.Lite bug Thanks this. -
On the insurance, obviously a quote is just a quote. No guarantee. However it is a company that I have a lot of coverage through for my other company and they carry all my personal insurance and home. Through my research I also would not allow him to refer to it as "hotshot" or use the term expeditor. Not sure if that had anything to do with it. Either way, I think my numbers are safe to carry me up to 15k/yr if thats what it comes to.
What would you guys expect for a new start up coverage cost?
Also, still curious about the driver payLast edited: Nov 26, 2018

Most new companies today, with a brand new MC number are being quoted in the $20,000.00 range for their first year in business. That’s for $100,000.00 cargo, and $1,000,000.00 liability,
It’s important that you ask your agent about being restricted to a 500 mile radius, and being able to haul vehicles. You’ll also want to ask him if he will send out cents to brokers on request during business hours. You do want to find out you’re restricted to 500 miles, can’t haul vehicles, or they won’t send out insurance certificates, after you’ve signed into a policy and put up a down payment. -
Thank you sir. I will be sure to clarify.
flatbedcarrier Thanks this. -
I have a question as far as getting your DOT and MC number. I just purchased a Ram 3500 dually. At the vehicle detail part of the form on the fmcsa site, would the ram 3500 be considered a none CMV although it would be used for commercial use? The other options are straight truck, truck tractor, trailer, IEP Trailer Chassis and a couple tanker ones (obviously not that).
I have had to go back and change a lot on there. Can i go back and change things on my number later? I figure it would be a fee but I don't know if i will ever be in Mexico or Canada...hauling cars (which they refer to as hazmat? weird)
Thanks in advance. -
Not sure exactly what you’re looking at but it I would say “Truck Tractor” would be the right choice.
And yes, you can log back in and make changes. FYI, you’re required by law to log back in every two years and update your MCS150 also. -
Alright thanks. It's the page when you are filling out the MC questions. The first page asks for how many non cmvs and then the next has a small list of cmv vehicles to choose from. But I'll try the truck tractor. Would you think I add a trailer to that? There is an option for it.
