I'm not exactly sure how I landed on this particular thread but as a 51 year old woman researching a potential career change and seriously considering truck driving, here I am. I went to my first 'open house' at a driving school (HDS Truck Driving Institute here in Tucson, Arizona wearing boot cut jeans, riding boots and a chiffon blouse. I made a conscious effort to dress practical, professional AND feminine. I was the only woman that did, so I find this thread funny, fascinating and ironic. I know I would like to do OTR but the truck stops and their bathrooms terrify me. Also any suggestions on schools (I have yet to checkout Southwest Driving School) and/or company's to work for would be greatly appreciated.

I wear steel toes and jeans. When it is summer...Dickie Work Shorts and Steel Toe . We got guys here at my place with tennis shoes and basketball shorts. They look like bums. The shirts are funny too. Dirty ,cartoon character or some other crap.

I’m a newer driver with 11 months experience. I don’t ever wear flip flops. That’s not me and I prefer pants mainly jeans. I have a backpack that I use but I see nothing wrong with that. But yeah I’m always prepared if an emergency and I’m picky how I look at customers. I want to represent myself and the company I work for.

Response... There's no denying it, more and more women are driving trucks these days. Whether it's the money, the 'freedom' (I use that word cautiously), the challenge, or adventure, or maybe all of the above, with the improvements in truck operation and comfort, trucking can be a nice career. OTR, has always been and probably will be - for a while, kind of the most alluring. It can be very tough if your not inclined to be away from home for weeks or longer. OTR presents a new driver with many challenges but that sense of freedom on the open road is appealing.
You wrote..."I know I would like to do OTR but the truck stops and their bathrooms terrify me".
Response.... If it was 20 or 30 years ago I would sympathize with you but, nowadays I dont think you should concern yourself. Sure, walking across a huge truckstop parking lot may seem a little intimidating but, in any good (well laid out) truck stop, it's no different than walking to your car at the mall. Just make sure drivers can see you so you don't get run over. Pick parking spots that are lighted whenever possible and avoid walking between trucks at night. The bathrooms (for the most part) are private and usually clean and well maintained.
I'm sure you've heard all of this before but it really is nothing to get worked up about. After a couple of days on the road it will become second nature to you.
Anyway, good luck at what ever you decide.Last edited: Dec 3, 2018

Flip flop and sweatpants. Unless I’m dressing up then it’s jeans, boots and my oh so fabulous leather vest. And I keep my wallet on a chain. Don’t want that sucker sneaking off
