They push family because people are sentimental and can be swayed by appeals to emotion.

It's an advertising technique and nothing more.

I don't know if it counts as "family" like but how's this for a great company. In order to keep me in my hours and get me home this weekend the president of the company brought me the load to save me a few hours round trip. He did it himself because we've got work for all the drivers.

So the company claims you are part of the family, I would seriously ask "what time is dinner on Thanksgiving?"

I agree on the emotional etc. Weak drivers flock to these siren calls by the thousands.

    Drivers are disposable.

You don't have money because you have family. I recall one near Brunswick explain to me despite his Federal DOJ Salaried Position, he would be very lucky to put together 100 dollars cash at any time. We kids playing at a spot of trucking had piles of money or none depending on what morning it is. After. (The party etc)

Great pay AND great hometime. New pay plan.

I guess that means they pay you to stay home.

I've trucking for 21.5 yrs, have 2.4 million miles. I've been offered better paying jobs at other, larger companies. So what, I'm simply a number to them. Friends husband said he could get me a job at OD here in Denver, with better benefits and better pay. Sure, but I'm afraid I'd lose something in the process, my identity. OD has roughly 20,000 employees, I wonder what number I would be?

Personally, I'd rather be a name and feel like I'm family

I've been with my company a few weeks over 21 yrs. Monday thru Friday, when the day is done, most of us drivers hang out in dispatch and decompress with the bosses. They all have names, Lori, Mark and Cory, I call them by that, I don't call them by their last names. I know their Mom's name (she was the owner when I started and later gave it to her kids, she still comes by from time to time and she'll ask about my father or my wife), when my Mom died suddenly on a Saturday in '03, I called to let them know. I got text messages from all of them in condolence. I showed up to work on Monday, they asked why I was there. I asked what else would I do, they told me to take the next 10 days off, and they paid me for it, they didn't charge it against my vacation or bereavement. I know and have met all their spouses (I've talked to a couple of them on the phone), I know the names of most of their kids. When I call in on the radio, it's Eric to Base or on the phone, it's Hi, this is Eric, let me talk to so and so. The only time I'm a number, is when I fuel, and that's for tracking purposes. My company credit card, it's in my name, not the bosses name.

Sure, I can go somewhere else and make $10K more than I make now, but why? I make a comfortable income, I'm not a number I'm a person, and I'm treated fairly and like a part of a family.

Ya I'm with striker. treat me like a human being and not a machine or truck number. Quality of life means way more to me than the paycheck. Of course that still matters a great deal, but there are plenty of other factors that I would consider deal-breakers for me outside of the pay rate.

Back in the day, the long haul drivers would make it in on Friday, and we would sit out in front of the shop and drink beer with the owner.

    How’s that for family?
